Similarly, Henri’s Galley receives five star reviews for its version, and local Macanese restaurant Riquexo, run by 102-year-old Aida de Jesus, dubbed ‘the godmother of Macanese cuisine’, also offers a delicious serving using a recipe that’s been in their family for generations.

A favorite amongst expats–especially the Portuguese–they have some truly traditional dishes such as African chicken, Macanese minchi, and Portuguese delicacies that’re codfish-based (à brás, roasted or boiled). Aside from their international dishes, their local cuisine offerings include specialties like spicy king prawn, curry fresh crab, whole roasted fish, amongst others. Opened in 1976, it’s not too crowded these days and has two cute tables set outside, overlooking Sai Van Lake and the Macau Tower.

Señor Henri has long since passed the oars down to his son, who keeps the ship right on course, sailing through calm seas and golden sunsets. You’ll be going primarily for the African Chicken, generally regarded as the best in town, but there are other reasons to visit Henri’s Galley too, with the Portuguese Chicken, Macau Sole, Spicy Prawns and Curry Crab all standout selections.

Henri’s is another old favourite in Macau that has and my top-choice for the Macanese specialty – African Chicken, which is consistently excellent at this restaurant. Henri’s is located along Avenida da Republicade on the shore of Sai Van Lake.
