Surely, you won’t find a better ambassador for Puerto Rico’s growing cocktail culture than Roberto Berdecia, co-founder of Colectivo Ícaro, the group behind some of the Island’s most popular hotspots like La Factoría, Jungle Bird, and Caneca Coctelería Móvil. Named Bartender of the Year in 2017 by the International Rum Conference (IRC), Berdecia’s first enterprise, La Factoría, remains the only bar in Puerto Rico and the second in Latin America to be listed among the World’s 50 Best Bars.

Owned by Roberto Berdecía of La Factoría fame, funky Junglebird is known for its wildly creative tiki-style cocktails and other agreeably tropical libations. Located just off La Placita de Santurce, it's a great place to start a bar hop around town. Mingle with locals in the neon-lit lounge or head out onto the patio and try one of the house cocktails.

Run by the same guys as La Factoría in Old San Juan, this tropical tiki bar is steps from La Placita. Although it has a charming patio, its dark, cozy interior is a pleasant respite from the busy marketplace, and the bar food is excellent, with a rotating, seasonal menu.

As part of Colectivo Icaro, a group of all-star cocktail bars in San Juan, Jungle Bird serves “not tiki, but Taino-tropical drinks.” Tepache, a drink made from fermented pineapple peel and rind, appears all over central America and the Caribbean, but bartenders at Jungle Bird build on the traditional low-ABV beverage to create a new take on the classic Piña Colada. In the Tepache Colada, servers combine tepache with Don Q Oro and coconut cream for a modern cocktail rooted in tradition.

Tiki drinks flow freely throughout the island (Puerto Rico is the birthplace of the piña colada after all), but Jungle BaoBao at Jungle Bird has an edge on the competition: Paxx Caraballo Moll’s imaginative bar food. The young chef, who promotes LGBTQ+ cooks through the hashtag #QueersInTheKitchen, works with local fishermen and farmers to create punchy plates that stand up to high- octane cocktails. Think fiery fried chicken and crispy “enoki bloom,” blooming onion–like mushroom clusters served with togarashi and saffron aioli.

The sexy cocktail bar is in the thick of La Placita de Santurce but is far more stylish than the cheap dive bars of the neighborhood while keeping the energetic atmosphere synonymous with them. Taino-influenced drinks are served, drawing on the Caribbean’s indigenous culture. Drinks are separated into tiki and tropical, and food, consisting of filling drunk food like mac and cheese and fried chicken sandwiches shouldn’t be overlooked.

This beloved pineapple and coconut beverage was actually created in Puerto Rico, and although its origins are still a bit mysterious, you'll find it at every bar. Jungle Bird, sister bar to La Factoría (aka where "Despacito" was filmed!), serves up a tasty and modern take on the national drink. Their recipe uses tepache (a fermented pineapple beverage) giving it a bold flavor that you'll want to taste twice...or five times.

The head chef formerly worked at Vianda and is creating really flavorful upscale dishes but in a casual and approachable way. Come for the drinks, stay for the food!

We stopped for drinks after dinner at JungleBird (heard they have great food too) which is a San Juan bachelorette must. They have fun, tropical drinks for a taste of the islands.
