I visited this charming coffee shop as a part of the food tour I went on. The sandwich I had was quite unique in that it was made of black forest ham, guava butter, and havarti cheese, a combination I can say I had never had until that point. It was delicious and the coffee was the perfect complement.

We also stopped in Old San Juna at Cafe Cuatro Sombras, a pretty coffee shop and coffee roasters, with food options as well. The coffee I had (both cortado and iced) was really good, and I also sampled their avocado toast with smoked salmon, a guava pastry and a pastry with beef and plantains.

Many a YouTube travel video made it clear that Cuatro Sombras is a must visit, and after stopping in twice, I know why. Since it's in a high-traffic tourist area, the shop can get really crowded, but it's worth the wait for a velvety espresso drink. I brought home a bag of their beans.

We started with a little pre-game boost at Cuatro Sombras with a cortadito and a croissant. A cortadito is a strong, light-roast espresso with just a little milk. And the croissant was a ham and cheese croissant… with guava butter in it.

Grown in the middle of the Yauco mountains at an altitude of more than 1000 meters above sea level. Like many others, they use a sun-drying process. The beans are kept under controlled climatic conditions until it’s time to grade them.
