What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Papiamento Restaurant is celebrated for its enchanting ambiance, particularly the romantic poolside setting in a historic mansion. Diners rave about the unique 'Stone Specials' and the attentive, team-based service. While many praise the overall dining experience, a few reviews mention inconsistent food quality and a lack of fresh fish options.
"Overall probably my favorite restaurant in Aruba, and that’s saying a lot. First, the atmosphere is wonderful. Seated in a garden setting, around a pool. When sunset comes it gets even better. The service is done as a team. Tonight we were lucky to have Ruth, who was wonderful, and despite our differences she laughed at my jokes! The service was attentive, polite, and prompt. The food is the real star of the show. The menu has a lot of Dutch specialties. Cheese is big here. It is possible to eat lighter and healthier. We had drinks, a well made cosmo, and an Austrian Grüner Veltliner. We shared the “Julius”, a Caesar salad. Frankly a bit sparse for $19 (ie more romaine would have helped), but lots of shaved Parmesan and croutons. Dinner was the usual….the Neptune platter. Shrimp, lobster tail 4-6 oz) and a fish filet (wahoo I think) served sizzling on a cooking stone. They warn you to let it continue to cook, and to turn it over on the stone. Comes with fresh steamed veggies and white rice. Very simple, amazingly delicious. Passed on dessert but all look amazing. Had the Papiamento coffee, with rum and coffee liqueur. Did not finish. A wonderful meal. We will be back!"

"Just returned from an incredible meal at this establishment. Excellent service, atmosphere, and food! The mushroom appetizer was perfectly earthy, with an excellent sauce and just the right amount of melted cheese. The entree of lobster, shrimp and fish served in a hot rock was perfect - only mildly spiced, so the flavor of the seafood shone through. An incredible wine cellar, a museum in the old restaurant, and a cigar lounge with a formidable selection of bourbon, scotch, and rum makes this the ideal place for a leisurely meal and nightcap. We will be back!"

"Walking into this restaurant, I was immediately captivated by an atmosphere that radiates the charm and warmth of an authentic Caribbean eatery. The vibrant decor and friendly staff—aside from a hostess who, glued to her computer screen while checking reservations, greeted each guest with robotic indifference—created high expectations for a memorable dining experience.
Unfortunately, the food failed to match the promise of its inviting surroundings. Every dish we sampled was disappointingly bland, lacking the bold, dynamic flavors that are the hallmark of Caribbean cuisine. The shrimp and panga fish were notably under-seasoned, missing the signature spices and zest I anticipated. Even the sides, which should have showcased tropical flair, felt uninspired and forgettable.
While the overall service was attentive and the ambiance delightful, the kitchen simply did not deliver the authentic, flavorful experience that makes Caribbean food so special. If you’re seeking a restaurant with great atmosphere, this place delivers. However, for those in search of genuine Caribbean taste, you may leave wishing for much more.
In hindsight, I should have known what to expect when the meal began with the driest bread imaginable—seemingly pulled straight from a plastic bag—and served with butter that tasted like the cheapest option from a local supermarket.
I feel like I just wasted 150 U.S. dollars."

The national dish of the ABC islands, keshi yena (stuffed cheese), comes in many different varieties—and every Aruban family has a closely guarded recipe of their own. It began as the hollowed rind of Edam or Gouda cheese, stuffed with beef, chicken, or seafood as well as onions, peppers, tomato sauce, olives, capers, raisins, and cashews, but it now qualifies as any type of casserole topped with melted Dutch cheese. One of the best versions is available at Papiamento in Noord, where the Ellis family combines shredded tenderloin, chicken, and some secret ingredients and cooks them to thick, bubbly perfection.
