Owner Kunal Ghose was a contestant on Top Chef Canada, but he first made a name for himself with the sustainability-minded Red Fish Blue Fish, a waterfront fish-and-chips walk-up. His new restaurant serves bright dishes, often inflected with Indian flavors and occasionally topped with a few slices of his housemade salmon belly bacon.

Fishhook specializes in Indian-French fusion, using primarily local and sustainably sourced seafood. Serving lunch and dinner, they also have some delicious shareable plates, including their signature Fishhook Poutine, with masala spiced fries, cheese curds, pakora cod, sweet tomato curry sauce, chilli honey drizzle, crispy fried onions and green onions. Their tartines are also to die for, with fresh, local ingredients like seared tuna, salmon belly, Humboldt squid, and cured sockeye.

The sort of place you’ll find yourself venturing to when the weather outside is cold and wet and you want something comforting and delicious to pick you back up. Especially good for seafood lovers (I guess the clue’s in the name), Fishhook specialises in food full of protein, personality, and love. I came here once on a date with an English guy and we split a chowder – and whilst the date went up in flames, the gorgeous food really did take the edge off.

It means that the chowder here is likely one of Victoria’s finest—thyme-chili roasted potato, coconut milk, smoked fish broth, wild fish confit and smoked salmon belly bacon will make your heart sing.

Next top Vancouver Island location is Fishhook in Victoria, taking the 40th spot on the list. This cozy restaurant is a popular local seafood stop, with an Indian-French flair.
