Elegant and traditional, well-appointed Dynasty Seafood should be on everyone's radar. As evidenced by the fish tanks, you'll find some of the freshest seafood on offer here, but there's also an array of dim sum delights and off-menu specials (be sure to ask for them). The menu is packed with choices, but regulars are rewarded by calling ahead to learn of special dishes requiring advance notice.

While takeout at entry-level Chinese restaurants has long been a staple in most Vancouver households, the elite restaurants at the top of their game often eschewed the idea. But as it became clear that wouldn’t be an ongoing option, many of the top rooms began to show that they could be masters at to-go as well. Chief among them was Gold winner Chef’s Choice, which opened on West Broadway mere months before the first shutdown but nonetheless captured the attention of the city’s die-hard foodies with its interpretation of classic Cantonese dishes like gold coin roasted chicken.

Last fall, while visiting Vancouver, my friend C and I had the opportunity to meet up with local foodies, fmed, twinkienic, Ellis, and grayelf for dim sum at Dynasty Seafood Restaurant. I’d tried dim sum at a few of the popular restaurants in the Vancouver area in the past including Red Star Seafood Restaurant (Granville location), Good Choice, The Jade Seafood Restaurant and the now defunct Spicy Court. With the exception of Good Choice, which I quite enjoyed, the rest of the others were just ok.

It’s no secret that I love Dynasty Seafood, their relentless pursuit of excellence and Chef Sam Leong’s culinary curiosity. It’s a rarity for Chinese chefs to leave their swim lanes, relying on carefully honed craftsmanship to propel them forward. Chef Leong looks not just for new ideas, but progression, moving local Cantonese forward without losing sight of tradition or technique.

Situated in the bustling Broadway City Hall area, Dynasty Seafood Restaurant is a jewel among Vancouver’s dim sum spots. Don’t be shy, your taste buds are in for a treat; delight in their Shrimp Dumplings or savor the Steamed Pork Bun. They also take catering orders for group dining, so do check their discounted card with the pre-set food menu if you’re also planning something.

Dynasty Seafood Restaurant is the place to be if you’re craving dim sum or Chinese cuisine in general. Located on West Broadway, Dynasty has endeared itself to locals and travelers alike, with many customers raving about their food. Similar to our other restaurant visits, we ordered some of the classics to see if Dynasty could make them right.

However, we’re only focused on dim sum for this guide, and luckily they’ve got a fantastic selection. Everything is menu based, so don’t be expecting that you’ll be able to grab what you want off those carts that are pushed around other spots.

I would usually recommend Kirin in downtown or Dynasty Seafood on Broadway to visitors. However, there is a new addition to this small list. Chef’s Choice Chinese Cuisine, or 當家海鲜酒家, has opened doors, known for an able team of chefs associated with at big names such as Chef Tony 頤東, Mott 32 卅二公館, and Grand Honour 阿一鮑翅。

Chandeliers, ornate drapery, and framed calligraphy are all in the mix, but the view of the North Shore Mountains is the real highlight. The Food: Carefully calibrated dim sum offerings. Think tender steamed black-truffle dumplings, lacy taro dumplings, and spicy braised beef tendon.

A frequent winner of the “Best Chinese” category, Dynasty is among the finest Chinese in the city with refined Cantonese dishes with a rustic Chiuchow spin. The “Siumai” Pork Dumpling topped with black truffle and the lemon scented BBQ Pork Pastry stand out at dim sum service.

I have a single request: typhoon shelter crab, also known as spicy garlic crab. Shortly after we order, our server approaches with a gray tub containing a wriggling, upside-down Dungeness crab, freshly plucked from the restaurant’s live seafood tanks. Man nods in approval.

With Chinese food, it's all about "doneness" a little bit over a little bit under and it affects everything. And Dynasty for me when I worked in the neighbourhood always hit, their chefs just had a very deft hand.

You should definitely look into getting dim sum while you’re in Vancouver. Our choice was Dynasty Seafood Restaurant. It has a long wait time for a reason.
