Reviews Summary

Blue Water Cafe is consistently praised for its phenomenal seafood and sushi, impeccable service, and excellent wine list. Diners highlight the freshness of the ingredients and the artful presentation of dishes, making it a memorable fine dining experience. While most reviews are overwhelmingly positive, some minor mentions of service not being 'top' have occurred, though the overall sentiment remains highly enthusiastic and recommends it for special occasions.

"A must-visit when in Vancouver! Everything was exquisite, from the food to the service. The duck breast special was hands down the best duck I’ve ever had. Every dish was beautifully presented and tasted fantastic. Lovely outdoor patio. Highly recommended!"

Dylan G

"We drove all the way from Seattle for this place, and after all these years, it still delivers. Top-notch food quality, impeccable service, and an awesome ambiance. We had cocktail prawns, lobster, and sablefish. Everything was perfect for our birthday dinner.

Shout-out to our server Robb. His attention to detail and dedication to making sure all our needs were met made our evening special and unforgettable.

We’ll definitely be coming back for our next big day or whenever we just don’t want to be disappointed."

Davin Tjia

"Came here on a Sunday evening and got seated at the sushi bar, which was a great experience — it’s always nice to watch the sushi chefs at work. We weren’t too hungry, so we ordered a few items to share. Our server recommended a bottle of sake to pair with the food (wish I had taken a photo of the label!), and interestingly, it was served in a wine glass instead of traditional sake cups. We ended the meal with dessert and an espresso martini. Overall, it was a great dinner — the atmosphere was relaxed yet upscale and very clean. Would definitely come back!"

Best Restaurants in Vancouver

Executive chef Frank Pabst heads this go-to restaurant for quality seafood in a brick-and-beamed heritage warehouse space in Vancouver’s bougie Yaletown. With a focus on locally and sustainably sourced seafood, a wide spectrum of dishes can be savored, both raw and in skillfully cooked dishes. Aside from the signature three-tier seafood tower, Blue Water Cafe is recognized for the festival Unsung Heroes, which occurs each February, an initiative Pabst has championed since 2004 to highlight undervalued species of seafood in innovative dishes, like mackerel filet with sesame carrot rice, jellyfish wonton tacos and a creamy carbonara with sea urchin.

21 Best Restaurants in Vancouver for Foie Gras, Fusion, and More

It’s more than a little confusing that Vancouver, a city ideally situated to harvest the Pacific Ocean’s bounty, has so few fine dining seafood restaurants; Blue Water Café, however, is a notable exception. Located in Yaletown and set in a converted warehouse, this is a warm and intimate spot. Dishes like sablefish with a miso sake glaze or yellowfin tuna with pepper piperade and romesco sauce go a long way toward showing what, exactly, a sure-handed cook can do with delicate ingredients.

Where Vancouver Chefs Go for Sushi

Recommended by Fiona Grieve from Buck Stop Saloon“If money isn’t a factor, I think the best sushi in the city is actually at the Blue Water Cafe in Yaletown. Add to this they have a far better beverage selection than your typical sushi restaurant, a killer patio, plus you can get great oysters so they win hands down.“However, there’s a great little underrated place on Robson called Sapporo Sushi that falls into the ‘cheap’ sushi category that has remarkably fresh fish and is really good if you’re just going for the food and not a night out.
