Reviews Summary

MIMI Chinese offers an upscale Chinese dining experience with creative interpretations of classic dishes and a chic ambiance. Diners rave about unique items like the four-foot belt noodles and shrimp toast, as well as attentive service and playful cocktails. However, some find the flavors muted or too salty, with portions being small for the price. The extremely dim lighting is also a common point of contention.

"Great Chinese restaurant with excellent service and a clean, inviting atmosphere.

The staff helpfully mentioned that some dishes are meant to be served family-style, but we were happy to find that between the two of us, we could enjoy a few options without needing to take anything to go.

We tried the iconic 4ft noodle — definitely a fun and tasty experience! We opted for the spicy version, and even though we don’t usually go for spicy food, it was surprisingly manageable and flavorful.

My personal favourite was the shrimp toast — absolutely delicious. The dessert, however, was a bit of a miss. It was a cheesecake–panna cotta–black sesame fusion that didn’t quite land for us, but we appreciated the gesture, especially the candle they added to help us celebrate both our birthdays.

All in all, a memorable and enjoyable meal. Would definitely come back!"

"A fantastic spot for regional Chinese cuisine with a creative twist. The tasting menu is well-curated, offering a great variety of flavors and textures. The cocktails are playful and delicious, especially the pandan cocktail served in an adorable panda glass — a fun highlight! The long noodles are an absolute must-try: silky, flavorful, and perfectly executed. The scallop dish stood out for its freshness and balance, and the desserts were unexpectedly amazing, rounding off the meal with a memorable finish. Highly recommended for a special night out or a unique dining experience."

"Mimi was such a letdown. From the overhyped, bland 4-foot belt noodles to the chicken with chili peppers that lacked any hint of mala flavour—it was beautifully fried and not greasy, but the flavours were muted. There was no numbing sensation, and it wasn’t nearly spicy enough. The server recommended their sweet and sour pork since they no longer serve char siu, but honestly, they should call it something else—it neither looked nor tasted like sweet and sour pork.

To top it off, the server pushed 5 dishes for just 2 people—we couldn’t even finish 3.

The $25 cocktails were just as disappointing. I’d forgotten how underwhelming this group’s cocktails tend to be. I enjoyed the food at Linny’s and Sunny’s Chinese, but the drinks at all 3 spots have been consistently subpar and way overpriced."

Mimi Chinese is the grown-up, fancier version of Sunnys Chinese, a casual and popular Kensington Market pop-up. The Four Foot Belt Noodle is coated in the restaurant’s signature Sichuan chili oil and comes with a pair of scissors for easy cutting, while classics like the simultaneously fluffy and crispy shrimp toast are perfect for sharing. The cocktails are equally fun, as the drinks come in ceramic mugs shaped like pandas and get filled with rum and baiji.

The biggest mistake you're making when eating at a Chinese restaurant is likely ordering individual dishes that act as culturally void, Westernized versions of Chinese food. Instead, Mimi's Chinese, which translates into "beautiful, beautiful Chinese," promotes the cultural practice of sharing dishes with authentic platters inspired by different regions within China in a dimly lit, upscale setting. Expect regionally listed menu items like stir-fried pork jowl with doubanjiang and Sichuan snow peas or Hunan chili sea bass with house-fermented chili, Fujian wine, and flowering chives from Hunan province.

Keith Siu, Braden Chong and David Schwartz initially set out to open up their long-planned restaurant MIMI Chinese, but put those plans on hold due to Covid. Their pivot to open Sunny’s Chinese takeout pop-up in 2021 was a happy accident for foodies looking to try coconut-filled bao or twice cooked pork. MIMI Chinese is now up and running, and Sunny’s Chinese is opening a bricks-and-mortar location soon.
