One of the coolest restaurants in St. John’s, the Adelaide Oyster House is a sultry, low-lit blend of pan-Asian cuisine, super-fresh local seafood and craft drinks. The oyster experience – a hand-picked selection from different provinces – is a must, and your shucker can talk you through them will also giving advice on the best wine to see them off with. The taco menu includes Thai pork and Kobe beef, or you can opt for small plates from bao buns to BBQ bacon burgers.

My first experience at The Adelaide Oyster House is still one of the most popular posts on this blog and for good reason. The music is always bumping, pints of local craft beers constantly flow from the taps and oysters shuckers work on overdrive at this busy eatery. Their Kobe beef lettuce wrap with Japanese big mac sauce, kimchi and rice puffs knocked my socks off from day one and is a mainstay — a brief interlude with brunch that fizzled out quicker than a hot frying pan in the sink and a shift in leadership, this spot still serves up the best tuna taco in the city.

Pints of local beer from across the province flow from the taps of this much-loved oyster house on Water Street. Adelaide Oyster House serves up cocktails like the Autumn Sangria with malbec, bourbon, apple cider and clove-cinnamon syrup or the Oyster Stout Caesar. Their fish tacos with breaded cod, avocado, coleslaw, smoky adobo sauce and chipotle mayo are a must-have bite on the internationally-inspired menu featuring miso scallops and tuna poke, or specialty items highlighting local seafood like uni carbonara made with sea urchin and bacon.

It should come as no surprise that Adelaide Oyster House knows how to treat raw seafood, but this dish was one of the best things I’ve ever eaten from there. When I first saw “scallops and strawberry” paired together on the menu, I was skeptical, but this dish was a triumph of melding sweet, heat and umami. The not-too-sweet strawberry puree had a latent hit of jalapeno and punch of cilantro and cradled the thin slices of raw scallop, topped with the crunch of thin wisps of fried potatoes.

In addition to Jeremy Charles, other notable restaurateurs include: Todd Perrin at Mallard Cottage (housed in one of North America's oldest wooden buildings); husband-and-wife-team Shaun Hussey and Michelle LeBlanc's at Chinched Bistro, where they showcase their passion for, "Newfoundland culture, food and preservation of old ways," (Chef Hussey is also noted for his skill with nose-to-tail cooking) and Stephen Vardy at Adelaide Oyster House; Andrea Maunder at Bacalao.

What once was an export headed for Asia (or stepped over on the beach) can now be found in some of my new favourite dishes. The Adelaide Oyster House featured a special dish with delicate al dente pasta shells bathed in creamy, cheesy, umami sauce: an eyes-rolling-back-in-the-head moment for me. This was the last place I ate before the global pandemic shuttered our restaurants for three months, and my goodness, for “the last meal” it was a damn good one.

This place has been open for some time, actually, but I only recently visited a few weeks ago and it kinda blew me away. I had tried to get in a few times earlier in the year, but the waitlist was always huge (they don’t take reservations for tables under five people). It’s a real intimate setting: tables crammed in tight, and even a social table for people who don’t mind mingling.

The Adelaide Oyster House is a trendy hotspot serving up sustainable food and a lively party vibe. Starting with the food: The oysters are a no-brainer here but I also loved the Korean lettuce wraps. The best time to go is after 9pm, when the music is turned up to 11 and a crowd of 20-somethings take over the place.

Adelaide Oyster House, for example, is a great place for internationally inspired small plates. They also have excellent cocktails, and perhaps the best selection of oysters around!. It does tend to get noisy inside, but if you can score a seat on their deck, you’ve got it made!

The culinary scene in St. John’s is booming thanks to restaurants like Raymonds, Chinched, and Adelaide Oyster House and their inventive dinner menus. But that doesn’t mean that breakfast fans are left high and dry in this eastern Canadian town on the island of Newfoundland.

Why you should go: The name should give you a hint: if you're looking for fresh oysters, look no further. They also have some of the best siu mai in town. Not only does Adelaide have excellent ratings on their food but their service is superb as well.

While we haven’t been to Adelaide yet ourselves, we don’t have a doubt that it lives up to the hype. Adelaide is known to have trendy vibes, awesome staff, and an exciting atmosphere. It’s a great place to have a classy night out with friends.

After leaving Adelaide Oyster House last year to become the chef at the not-yet-opened Brewdock, COVID happened. Along with the normal delays that accompany any opening, it has left him without a restaurant kitchen.

Adelaide Oyster House has oysters and generally great small plate menu. Though the level of douchbaggery is a bit much (No reservations generally and a waiting list that varies based on how cool you look)

Eating at this restaurant was the best dining experience I've had in St John's. The food is good, the price is good, and the service was exceptional. Very highly recommend for gluten free eaters.

It is worth mentioning on the list thanks to Adelaide Oyster’s special menu. It is special for its fresh oysters servings. This makes it quite a unique food spot in St. John’s.
