Pho Tay Ho has been one of my favourite for years, but not for the dac biet, but for their chicken pho. I know, I said I would be gauging the city’s best based on the house special but I think this unique pho Ga deserves a mention and a spot on the top five. The Pho Ga, Long ga, Tai is a chicken based noodle soup that includes generous pieces of chicken, chicken heart, liver and gizzard as well as slices of rare beef.

After all, Marylyn was raised in her parent’s kitchen where she acquired her unique taste, over at their St. Denis Street Vietnamese restaurant, Pho Tay Ho. The family started this business back in 1986 and it is still going strong. Indeed, the name Hang is a nod of appreciation to Marylyn’s mom.

Pho Tay Ho is one of the best restaurants in Montreal for Vietnamese food. Pho Tay Ho pays homage Vietnam’s capital city of Hanoi and nearby neighborhood Tay Ho for the Hot Tay Lake region. Pho is a classic Hanoi dish but often has a bit of a different flavor by district.

With her expertise in modernizing Vietnamese cuisine while honouring its traditions, Tran was the perfect partner to bring Gumbley’s vision to life. And thus, Hằng was born, named after Tran’s mother, who still manages the iconic Pho Tay Ho.

Somehow the broth, noodles and vegetables are a huge comfort and Pho Tay Ho is my go-to place in my hour of need. Any pho you pick will have a great broth and a generous helping of toppings. Squeeze in some sriracha for some extra heat.

Montreal native and Vietnamese food expert Jodi of Legal Nomads recommends Ca Phe Con Leche and Pho Tay Ho. You’d be a fool not to take her up on her suggestions. I, unfortunately, discovered them too late.

If you're from the north-east, Pho Tai Ho on St-Denis and beaubien is pretty good. I love the cured beef salad.
