Reviews Summary

Joe Beef is a highly acclaimed Montreal institution known for its decadent dishes and cozy atmosphere. While many praise the exceptional quality of steaks and unique flavor combinations, some find the famed lobster spaghetti to be overhyped and pricey. Service is consistently noted as friendly and attentive, contributing to a memorable overall experience. Despite the occasional critique on price or specific dishes, it's considered a must-visit for its culinary innovation and charming ambiance.

"For the amount of hype Joe Beef gets I was worried it might not live up to expectations. The starters were good but not great, except for the oysters. Perfectly shucked and nice and plump. However the mains really kicked things up a notch. My hanger steak was perfectly cooked and served in quite possibly the best, most rich, decadent sauce I've ever tasted. Then came desert. We tried their signature 20 layer cake and the choux pastry. The latter of which I still think about 4 months later. Easily a top 3 desert dish I've tasted. Service was very good and staff was attentive. Our server was so great, funny and personable. Also knew the menu inside and out. Definitely recommend if you are in Montreal. not sure if it entirely lives up to its reputation but a damn good meal nonetheless."

Ben Marsico

"Julien provided truly warm and thoughtful service, adding a lovely personal touch to the evening. The ambience is charming—perfect for a special occasion. While I found most of the dishes to be fairly average, the spaghetti with lobster was a standout and the one dish I’d return for. The steak, however, didn’t quite hit the mark for me. Overall, it’s a trendy spot in a lively, sought-after location—definitely worth experiencing at least once."

Alice Ng

"We celebrated my husband’s birthday here and had an amazing experience.
The service was outstanding — our waiter was incredibly attentive, explaining the menu and daily specials in detail, and helping us choose the perfect wine.

We started with the croquettes, then had the rib eye with carrots as our main dish — everything was delicious. We found it funny that, for my husband’s birthday, they placed a candle on a potato instead of a dessert 🤭 — such a quirky and memorable touch!

For dessert, we ordereded - apparently their house specialty. It was worth it.

Total including tip and 4 glass of wine was close to $400.

All in all, one of the best dinners we’ve ever had in Montreal. Highly recommended!"

Since 2005, locals and tourists from around the world have clamoured for tables to experience the unique experience offered by Fred Morin and his dedicated team. The widely acclaimed international reputation of Joe Beef was forged from the early years, notably thanks to generous plates - to say the least decadent - revealing accomplished research, mastered techniques, and a unique eloquence, always derived from Quebec or Canadian terroir.

Where to eat the best Jewish food in Montreal

Joe Beef, a 19th-century Irish-Canadian tavern owner, wasn’t Jewish, and nor are Fred Morin and David MacMillan, who named their original restaurant for him and now own a group of world-beating Montreal eateries. Raegan Steinberg, Alex Cohen and Jeffrey Finkelstein have all worked at Joe Beef; Hof Kelsten supplies their bread; and the most innovative neo-Jewish dish I’ve ever tasted is David MacMillan’s smoked-meat croquette. That blend of old and new, Jewish and gentile, French and English, thick skin and tender centre, is quintessential Montreal.

Their chalkboard menu may be ever-changing, but the quality of the beefy steaks served up by the culinary bosses behind Joe Beef is always above-par. Their soft and fatty steaks, often served in the pan they’re cooked in, may come wrapped in bacon, served with scallops, or swimming in gravy, but no matter how it’s wrapped, Joe Beef’s beef (almost) is the greatest gift you could ever give to your mouth.

To say Joe Beef is a Montreal institution would be a severe understatement. Owners and chefs David McMillan and Fred Morin have been serving natural wine, seasonal fare, and a humble home for everyone from international chefs and celebrities to students and young families since opening their doors more than a decade ago. Ask any local and they’ll tell you, despite the near-impossible feat that is getting a reservation, Joe Beef feels decidedly more like stepping into a family friend’s home for a decadent — yet down-to-earth — meal, than it does an internationally renowned landmark.

Is the Michelin Guide snubbing Montreal restaurants, or vice versa?

I don’t think we have many three-star restaurants in Montreal,” said Frédéric Morin, chef and co-owner of Montreal institution Joe Beef, Vin Papillon, Liverpool House and McKiernan. “I don’t think we have many two-star restaurants. But I do think that what makes Montreal a city people want to come visit, what makes it a city I want to live in and have restaurants in, and that I enjoy dining out in, is that a lot of our restaurants are one-star.
