What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Bar St-Denis is lauded for its spectacular and innovative cuisine, offering a unique blend of French and Middle Eastern flavors. Diners consistently praise the attentive and knowledgeable service, as well as the fashionable, cozy atmosphere. While many dishes are highlighted as exceptional, some note that the menu's seafood focus might not appeal to everyone, and a rare instance of overcooked lamb was mentioned.
"This place is spectacular. The menu varies when you go, but the food is outstanding. A lot of seafood, so if you're not a seafood person, this place might not be for you. I missed pictures of the last two dishes, which were a chicken dish that tasted like a Thanksgiving turkey and a phenomenal duck dish.
The service is phenomenal. All servers are articulate and always smiling. They were accommodating to some people's needs. No complaints.
The atmosphere is very quaint. This place is a small hole in the wall that opens a world of wonders and excitement. My only complaint is not knowing which bathroom to go in. The pictures on the doors don't indicate which one will be right for you.
I was not disappointed with the portion sizes, flavors, or dishes. I'm looking forward to going back and doing it all again."

"One of the best experiences I’ve had in all of Montreal. The design of the restaurant, the service, the food; it’s all amazing. If you’re in MTL then, without question, this has to be on your list.
I ordered the razor clams. They were served in the shell but prepared with a bright mayo like sauce and really fresh olive oil. The labneh had a pistachio and olive spread that I couldn’t get enough of. The duck was insane. Hands down one of the best I’ve had. The stars of the show all shined but the accompanying staff were excellent too. I mean the French fries. They were excellent and it’s impressive to see a restaurant knock every ball out of the park. I love it here"

"Truly incredible dining experience. The food was creative and delicious combination of French and Middle Eastern, with bold and bright flavors. It was elevated and technically well executed, while still having heart and soul. (We had the labneh and the lamb tartare both served with homemade flatbread, the white asparagus with anchovy and maple, and the tonnarelli with sea urchin- wow! That dish was next level.) The atmosphere was fun and lively with a contemporary art deco vibe. We sat at the bar and had incredible service. Our bartender (shoutout to Bastien) was not only friendly, but seriously knowledgeable about wine, spirits, and the food. He tailored our evening to our likes and truly enriched our experience- hospitality at highest level. Highly recommend dining here."

The 24 Best Restaurants In Montreal - Montreal
You might pass by Bar St-Denis on your way to the Jean-Talon Market without even realizing—it’s tucked in between a grocery store and a revival church. The menu at this modern bistro is constantly changing: think scallops with lemon confit, duck breast with local chanterelles, or Egyptian-inspired small plates like clams with tabbouleh. Their homemade labneh with olives, a spectacular olive oil-swirled sundae dusted with pistachios and served with crunchy-edged flatbread, is one of the highlights.
Where to drink the best selections of natural wine in Montreal
A project of David Gauthier and Emily Homsy, a professional couple who first met at Pied de Cochon, Bar St-Denis is the spot they're continuing their journey together in the heart of La Petite-Patrie. Although both chefs, the wine and cocktails take up as much space as the food, with the wine list giving way only to natural wines from private imports at affordable prices.
The Top 25 Restaurants in Montreal Right Now
Though Bar-St-Denis may have started as a watering hole with elevated bar food, Emily Homsy and David Gauthier’s eatery has clearly evolved to become one of Montreal’s best and most innovative restaurants. Having made its way onto the Canada’s 100 Best Restaurants list, this regular haunt for industry folk and Little Italy locals has built its reputation on its easygoing atmosphere, genuine hospitality and undeniably excellent food.
The Best Restaurants in Montreal, Quebec
When Emily Homsy and David Gauthier opened this Rosemont bar in 2018, it was the place to go for a Friday night gin and tonic with fries. It’s still good for that, but Homsy and Gauthier have since pushed the menu far above standard. Your cocktail might be the Peppermousse, mixed with local La Distillerie du St. Laurent citrus gin and pepper, and in lieu of fries, you’ll get tater tots topping a vinegary crab and daylily salad.
