Reviews Summary
The Bicycle Thief is a beloved Halifax institution, celebrated for its exceptional Italian-inspired cuisine, especially its house-made pastas and fresh seafood. Diners consistently praise the attentive and friendly service, the vibrant atmosphere, and the stunning waterfront patio views. While the price point is considered high, most agree the dining experience, including the delectable desserts, is well worth the splurge.
"We had a really wonderful experience dining at The Bicycle Thief. From the moment we arrived, the service was warm and welcoming. Our server gave fantastic recommendations, and we truly enjoyed everything we ordered. You can really tell when someone knows the menu well — and they definitely did.
Although the ambiance inside is cozy and beautifully done, since it’s summer, we chose to sit out on the patio. It was the perfect spot to enjoy the weather and the beautiful view, which made our lunch feel even more relaxed and enjoyable. The patio setup gives off that laid-back yet classy vibe that’s perfect for a special occasion or even just a nice catch-up with friends.
The food itself was top-notch. Every dish was fresh, flavourful, and plated with care — definitely lived up to the restaurant’s reputation. But the highlight was our dessert, which came out with “Happy Anniversary” written on the plate. That small gesture made our celebration feel even more memorable and special. It’s those thoughtful touches that leave a lasting impression.
Overall, it was an amazing dining experience — from the food and ambiance to the exceptional service. We’ll definitely be coming back and recommending it to others."

"Really amazing restaurant with outstanding food. Oysters came out quickly, and were well shucked and very fresh. The lobster pasta is a must order! Definitely one of the best items on the menu. The beef short ribs were phenomenal and practically fell off the bone, with the mashed potatoes cooked to perfection. The staff was amazing and very helpful, however my only critique is that the service was slightly slow, but nonetheless good. We finished everything that we ordered and the portions are genuinely the perfect size. Atmosphere is alive and the restaurant is beautiful. I recommend calling ahead of time as it is very busy! It is a must try in Halifax ."

"We came to this restaurant around 4 p.m, and luckily they had a spot for us! If you come at almost any other time, a reservation is definitely needed. Most of our food was great and worth the price, especially the flash-fried calamari, however the lobster roll was quite a small portion, and was absolutely not worth the 35 dollar price tag. The start of the service was a bit confusing, with multiple waitresses starting us off at the same time, but this seems like a one-off.
Overall, this place is definitely worth trying."

The Rising Tide of Halifax Cocktails
Overlooking the harbor next door is The Bicycle Thief, where beautiful weather had earlier lured me into an afternoon of outdoor day drinking. The menu was promising and creative, yet I decided on a Canadian classic, a Bloody Caesar, which is basically a Bloody Mary that went on an ocean holiday and never came home. From my perch I had a fine view of the harbor, and I lapsed into a minor reverie involving tall ships, until a yoga class began to unfurl their mats on the pier across the way, right in plain view of those of us drinking.
