As its name implies, it’s not the fanciest restaurant in town, but it is one of the smallest and a South End mainstay. Chef Terry Vassallo—who gained fame at Lunenburg’s Trattoria Della Nonna—opened Mappatura Bistro in 2016 with his wife and their co-owner Simone Mombourquette, who runs the front of the house. Mappatura’s Italian-inspired menu focuses heavily on hand-made pasta, any one of which is always a reliable choice, but don’t have a meal here without ordering chef Vassallo’s calamari.

When you enter the side door of Mappatura Bistro, into their airy, modern yet approachable dining room, you’re surrounded by windows such as the large permanent sunroom on the side of it’s adjoining building. Whether it’s sunshine or a light snow, there is warmth inside and although you can see all the elements, you’re cozy indoors. The food is also warmth and comfort, with a menu of familiar Italian recipes: gnocchi puttanesca, scallop carbonara, spaghetti bolognese and so on.

This year, restaurants are offering take out menus (as well as dine-in) so that everyone can enjoy their dining experience at their own comfort level. There are also plenty of family friendly options like Burnside Pizza in Dartmouth,Tom’s Family Restaurant in Lower Sackville, or Jake’s Family Restaurant in the beautiful town of Yarmouth. The Dine Around website is updated daily throughout the month of February, with new restaurants being added all the time.

Favourite Italian is Mappatura Bistro or Morris East (pizza mostly, but some other Italian goodies sprinkled in). If you do Morris East, head for the one on Vernon Street (the OG on Morris St was sold recently and is not operated by the same team).
