What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
King Of Donair is celebrated for its iconic Halifax donair, a local staple that has gained national attention. Many praise the unique sweet garlic sauce and generous portions. However, some diners feel the quality has declined, citing cold food and disappointing sauce. Prices are also a point of contention for some.
"My first Donair, the iconic Halifax indulgence.
I prepared myself for disappointment as this sounded like a food choice for inebriated university students.. In fact, I have been told that by inebriated university students. And I was sober as a judge on the day question.
Also, my experience with the Donair outside of Halifax was not great. Fakers. But when in Rome, right?
Result: I am now a believer!! This thing kicked ass in every way, as far as flavor, texture, and balance. The sweet garlic sauce, which I doubted most of all, brought it all together.
Of course, it was way more food than I should’ve eaten, but I was incapable of stopping once I started. (Once you are covered in sauce what is the point in stopping?)
The super-dive vibe added to the whole experience too.
So I will be back again someday, next time in Halifax.
Thanks, King, for a memorable 4 minutes!"

"Is this spot truly the King of Donairs?? Probably not.
Don't get me wrong, this place gets the job done, and I would be glad to enjoy a nice meal here. Although I feel it is not the best out there and I prefer my donair sauce to be slightly less thick. This could just be my preference, though, so definitely try them and find out!"

"I drove 1500 km to Halifax for the much storied King of Donair and was not disappointed! I give the donair of my dreams a good, solid three thumbs-up!"

Where to Stay in Halifax
Just 10 minutes drive west of Downtown Halifax, the West End is known for its no-frills culinary gems like King Of Donair and Phil’s Seafood along Quinpool Road, and its giant shopping malls. Halifax Shopping Centre is here, spanning both sides of Mumford Road, and there’s a flourishing retail district along Dutch Village Road. Though West End lacks mainstream attractions, Fairview Lawn Cemetery in the northern section of the district contains a poignant section dedicated to victims of the Titanic disaster – the cruise liner sank off Nova Scotia in 1912, and some 121 passengers were buried here.

King of Donair (or KOD as the locals call it) is a classic place to get the Halifax version of an iconic Greek and Turkish street food snack. The Halifax donair was introduced by a Greek immigrant restaurant owner in the 1970s who tweaked the Southern European snack to suit local tastes. Spit roasted shaved beef, tomatoes, and onions are doused with Halifax’s signature tangy, sweet donair sauce – a concoction of sweetened condensed milk, vinegar, and garlic.

King of Donair // home to the official food of Halifax: the donair!. It’s similar to what we would know as a donor kebab, except with spiced beef instead of lamb, and the sauce is a little sweeter than you’d expect. Otherwise, it’s largely the same: meat cooked on a spit, shaved into a warmed pita, doused in a moreish garlic sauce, and garnished with onions & tomatoes etc.; it’s so delicious!.
