Henry House

Set in the former home of Canadian politician William Alexander Henry, Henry House is a three-level restaurant, pub and private dining facility. The 18th century ironstone building is the perfect backdrop for the restaurant’s menu of British pub fare and Maritime cuisine. The menu is the same whether you choose to sit in the more formal dining room upstairs, or in the casual pub on the lower level.

At this pub in what was once the house of a prominent Canadian politician, Haligonian brewers uphold beer-making traditions dating back to 1754, and you can sample the results, along with craft and bottled beers from beyond the city. The food is impressive, too—especially the Nova Scotia salt cod fishcakes and beer-battered fish-and-chips. In winter fireplaces keep the ironstone building toasty.

Some foods are unapologetically timeless and best consumed anywhere. But if you’re looking for surroundings to match the dish, Henry House, one of the best restaurants in Halifax fits the bill. Located in downtown Halifax near the waterfront, the 2.5 storey stone structure with its gable roof and attic windows is a prime example of a style of residence popular in the 19th century among the elite.

What to get at Henry House: Shepherd’s Pie – ground beef, onion, carrot, mashed potatoes & cheddar cheese served with mixed green salad. Henry House is a historic pub located in the heart of downtown Halifax. The building dates back to the 1830s and has been restored to its original Victorian-era style, with wood paneling, antique furnishings, and stained glass windows.

James had actually been to the Granite brew pub in Halifax at The Henry House, a National Historic Site, but Jennifer hadn’t. Unfortunately, the Granite has since moved its brewery away from The Henry House and dropped its brew pub license. But The Henry House still carries Granite on tap and their Best Bitter tastes as good as ever.

Henry House brings that classic English pub experience, tucked into an 1830s stone heritage house. The setting feels like stepping back in time, perfect for an easygoing night out or a laid-back lunch with friends. The menu is filled with comfort foods, making it hard to pick just one dish.

The Henry House has an upstairs and a downstairs, and both have their own charm. Upstairs is more of a restaurant, downstairs is a pub, and they both serve great food. Upstairs is casual elegance; downstairs has small cozy booths and open two person tables to choose from.

Old Peculiar—it’s both the name of the best beer made on the premises (since it opened as Atlantic Canada’s first brewpub in the mid-1980’s) and an apt description of the place. From the outside, the 1834 ironstone building is austere and more than bit foreboding.

I’m always surprised by how good this chowder is, even if it’s a bit pedestrian. I really shouldn’t be surprised, though. I’ve always enjoyed the food at the Henry House.

With great selections of craft beer, ales and traditional pub food. This is a great spot for those of you that want to keep it low key on V-Day.
