Husband and wife Andy and Tanya King worked at da Maurizio Fine Dining restaurant before purchasing it themselves in 2007. Andy (as chef) and Tanya (long-time manager) have implemented changes to the elegant dining room on Lower Water Street but remain faithful to the traditional Italian menu, which capitalizes on local fish and seafood. That’s evident in such dishes as spaghettini aragosta – fresh, locally caught lobster in a sauce of white wine, San Marzano tomatoes and cream.

This Northern Italian restaurant is a classic big-night-out choice. Subdued lighting, elegant furnishings, fresh flowers: all the details have been attended to, and ditto the food, which is impressive and satisfying. Excellent seared foie gras is always on the menu, as is veal scaloppine sautéed with lobster and topped with a creamy garlic-and-cognac sauce.

With a wine list spanning four continents and a menu with options for everyone, Da Maurizio is for special occasions for sure, but well worth the price. They even have white tablecloths, which according to my mother makes it feel even fancier. Located in the Brewery Complex, a recognized Historical Place in Canada, it’s another restaurant close to the Waterfront, giving you the option to work up an appetite with a walk before, or to stroll around after your meal (weather permitting…or maybe not if you’re a fan of romantic rainy atmosphere).

A short walk from the waters of the Atlantic sits Da Maurizio on Lower Water Street. This upscale eatery specializes in Italian fare and has plenty of customized event menus to choose from for your rehearsal dinner (don’t worry, they all involve pasta). Its private dining rooms have kept things classic, with wood accents, exposed brick walls and plenty of artwork to scope out while you eat.

Da Maurizio Dining Room is situated right on Halifax’s seafront. The restaurant serves a range of different dishes including Italian as well as a selection of gluten free and vegetarian options sure to suit every guest. Recommended dishes from the menu include the escargots, lobster tail and the calamari appetizer which is highly reviewed and definitely worth the money.
