The Banff Ave Brewing Company uses pure Canadian Rockies glacier water as its beer’s not-so-secret ingredient. The water makes for a perfectly imperfect beer, as it comes chock-full of minerals usually removed before the brewing process. Open since 2010, the Banff Ave Beer Co has six handcrafted beers on tap at the brewpub in downtown Banff, along with a food menu that puts an eccentric twist on traditional pub fare.

Founded in 2010, this sister brewpub to Jasper Brewing Co. is part of the Bearhill family of craft-beer brands. On the food front, there are items such as poutine (fries, Quebec cheese curds and brown gravy) and soft pretzels with coarse sea salt, black pilsner cheese fondue and beer mustard. Beer ranges from Pond Hockey Pale Ale to Brewers Oar ESB (English-style extra special bitter).

Located on the second floor of Clock Tower Mall, the Banff Ave Brewing Co. may be new to Banff, but owners Dan Rodrigues, Socrates Korogonas and Brett Ireland are well seasoned, having owned and operated a popular microbrewery in Jasper, the Jasper Brewing Co. since 2005. The brewed on-site beers are created using pure local glacial water (with the added chlorine removed – thanks guys, much appreciated!) and the classic ingredients of hops, malted barley and their own cultured yeast!. There’s nothing overly done or fancy here just good honest well-crafted beer and a manageable variety of 7 or so styles to work your way through.

Park Distillery uses locally harvested family farmed grain and locally sourced glacier water to create their delicious spirits and cocktails in what Master Distiller Matt Hendriks often describes as a “glacier-to-glass”approach to distilling. There are a range of spirits available here, from vodkas, gins, and whiskys, with something for everyone. One of the highlights is the alpine dry gin, which utilizes, among other botanicals, spruce tips foraged from not far outside the national park boundaries.

Brewing Co. craft their own beers and feature a weekly guest cask from other regional breweries. Located right on the main drag in downtown Banff, the Brew Pub has a variety of beers on the menu for those who are eager to try something new. Note: Due to the town of Banff’s unique location within a protected National Park, these exclusive house-made brews can only be purchased on-site and are not exported outside of Banff – so you know you’re sipping something special.

Besides brewing tasty beers (they usually have six to eight of their own on tap, plus a bunch of other local brews to sample), the Banff Ave Brewing Co serves up delicious and mostly carnivorous fare. I opted for the poutine with bison chili, which had big chunks of tender meat in a rich gravy that paired perfectly with the melted cheese curds and crisp fries it sat on.

For those who want to experience more of the local beer scene, or have a penchant for craft brews, a great time to visit the town is during the annual Banff Craft Beer Festival in December. This festival features 30+ Alberta-based craft brewers who descend on the town for just over a week each year. Local bars and restaurants also get in on the action every year, with special promotions and beer-themed offerings only available during the event’s run.

The food is great (my favourite is the fried chicken sandwich), and they actually brew their own beer, so technically it’s a brewery. It’s also one of the few places in Banff that serves food later in the evening (until 11pm), so we often come here if we’re getting back late from the mountains. It goes without saying that the beer here is awesome, and it’s perfectly located on Banff Ave so you can stumble home afterwards!

For breweries, I stopped at Banff Ave Brewing Co and I actually sat down on the first floor which was a bit more casual, it was called the “taproom”. THe bartenders were nice and people were friendly. THere is indoor and outdoor seating, really great people watching.

Brewing Company has good food, on site brewed beer and a great atmosphere. It’s no surprise it’s a favorite locals hangout. In the warmer months it’s great to sit on the balcony to take in the views and watch the action down below on Banff Avenue.

We’re huge fans of trying out local brews and Banff Brewing Company did not disappoint!. Great views, great vibes, and GREAT beer!. It’s located right in the center of town; the perfect spot after a long day of hiking.
