Café del Cielo

Perched on a hill overlooking the town, Café del Cielo is a must for its breathtaking views of Baños and the valley below. Standard café fare can be found on the menu, including crêpes, locally-produced coffee, and a delectable range of gourmet sandwiches, the best of which is the scrumptious portobello.

If you are looking for Ecuadorian fare El Aroma y Sabor de Mercedes never fails; besides having delicious cheese, chicken and meat empanadas, you can find locro, mote pillo, and mote with pork rind (Maldonado y Ambato, also just to the side of the Pailón del Diablo waterfall). Or visit the Mercado Central to taste traditional llapingachos, chicken broths, yahuarlocro (the famous potato-and-blood soup) and the “levanta muertos”, a potent drink with avocado, spinach, guava, an endemic fruit called borojó and malt extract that, they say, cures your hangover in minutes. Next to the market you can visit Pasaje Artesanal for more souvenirs or if you are looking for art, café/gallery Barahona, on Calles Vieira and Montalvo, where artist Marcelo Barahona displays his work.

Good options for sampling these delicacies include Casa Hood, which provides a cozy atmosphere, and Café del Cielo, known for its exceptional views and local dishes. The central market is also a great place to experience authentic and affordable local meals prepared by the residents.

After that, visit the avenue of the cascades until you reach the powerful “Pailón del Diablo.” Enjoy lunch while absorbing the beauty of the views of Baños at Café del Cielo. Continue your journey until you reach Riobamba. This small city is located right at the heart of Ecuador.

A little outside of Baños you’ll find a spot worth stopping at Cafe del Cielo, perched on the mountain above Baños and part of Luna Runtun. At sunset, this place has incredible views of the surrounding landscape and also serves crepes, ice cream, and local coffee.

We returned to a crossroad, and instead of walking to the forest, we turned right, walked around Columpio Fantasias de Volar, which is another park with a swing, then went around Cafe del Cielo, and here we could choose how to continue.

It is a bit of a hike to get up there but your coffee (or ice cream) will taste ten times better as well. They serve food and alcohol as well and the view is unlike any other. If the hike tired you out that much, they even have a spa.

The Café del Cielo offers lighter options, such as sandwiches, crepes (we especially enjoyed the thyme beef crepe), and coffees (beautiful layered ones at that!) with prices running from $2 – $7.

Cafe del Cielo is at the base of the volcano and the city of Banos. High in the sky you can take photos from the outdoor patio with the expansive views of Banos behind you.

Have unique views in baños on board a double-decker bus which will take you to Casa del Árbol and Cafe del cielo.
