Whoever Grandma (Mémé) Gusta was, she didn't tolerate a 28-inch waist. Portions veer on the gigantic here, while the cooking is firmly traditional. That's no bad thing, and this cozy restaurant dishes up one of the finest versions of stoofvlees in Flanders: a huge metal serving bowl of flaking meat soaked in dark gravy and accompanied by bowls of salad, frites, dijonnaise, and a rough-cut apple sauce.

Diners are always well fed at Mémé Gusta 00 32 9 398 23 93, memegusta.be which specialises in ‘grandma’s cooking’. Expect stews, stoemp (mashed potatoes and vegetables) topped with sausage, and mastel – a bread that’s buttered, sprinkled with brown sugar and ironed flat. I didn’t know what traditional Flemish food was but Mémé Gusta delivers, with excellent children’s options and varieties of main dishes too. The stews are delicious (I opted for the vegetarian option), we tried Belgian wine, and we finished off with a creme brûlée as the kids tucked into the children’s dessert of chocolate profiteroles. Thoroughly recommend this relaxed but delicious joint.

Mémé Gusta is situated about 100m from the Gravensteen castle. It's a bit more hip and trendy, and they serve classic Belgian cuisine, but always with a modern twist. Besides stoverij they also serve a great Vol-au-Vent, North sea shrimp croquettes, etc.
