Reviews Summary

Mémé Gusta is highly praised for its authentic, generous portions of traditional Flemish comfort food and its cozy, vintage atmosphere. Diners particularly love the flavorful stews and welcoming service, though some reviews mention long wait times and occasional inconsistencies in service speed. Overall, it's a beloved spot for experiencing hearty Belgian cuisine.

"We ordered the confit duck croquette, hanger steak and pork stew. The main course came with a lot of side dishes and the portion was generous. All food tasted incredibly good and the service was nice as well. 😊👍🏻"

"If you are in Ghent and are looking for an amazing traditional Belgian cuisine - Mémé Gusta is the perfect restaurant to eat at. Everything in this restaurant is perfect - the service, the food and the atmosphere. Ona, who took care of us on two separate occasions, is absolutely the best! She is caring, attentive and knowledgeable about everything that the restaurant offers. We truly enjoyed their mussels, stews, steaks and desserts. I promise you, you won’t be disappointed!!!"

"I recently had lunch here with friends on a Saturday, and overall, we had a pleasant experience! The warm welcome and cozy interior set a great tone right from the start. We particularly enjoyed the fresh shrimp, which paired wonderfully with the bread, butter, and delicious pork fat alongside our cocktails.

We opted for just the main courses, and we were delighted by the remarkable flavors of the Belgian dishes. One unique touch was the sauce served straight from a saucepan, adding to the dining experience. However, I have to mention that some of the portion sizes felt a bit small for the men in our group, and the wait time was longer than we anticipated.

As Belgians, we found it to feel like your typical brasserie, albeit on the pricier side. I can see this being a fantastic spot for tourists looking to enjoy authentic local cuisine. It truly captures the essence of what a good Belgian restaurant should offer—food that reminds you of your grandmother’s cooking.

Is it worth it? If you’re a tourist, absolutely! For locals like us, it’s a solid choice but perhaps not the most affordable option if you're looking for the same dishes elsewhere. The combination of a warm welcome, high-quality food, and a cozy ambiance made for a memorable dining experience overall!"

Restaurants in Ghent and the Leie

Whoever Grandma (Mémé) Gusta was, she didn't tolerate a 28-inch waist. Portions veer on the gigantic here, while the cooking is firmly traditional. That's no bad thing, and this cozy restaurant dishes up one of the finest versions of stoofvlees in Flanders: a huge metal serving bowl of flaking meat soaked in dark gravy and accompanied by bowls of salad, frites, dijonnaise, and a rough-cut apple sauce.

Diners are always well fed at Mémé Gusta 00 32 9 398 23 93, memegusta.be which specialises in ‘grandma’s cooking’. Expect stews, stoemp (mashed potatoes and vegetables) topped with sausage, and mastel – a bread that’s buttered, sprinkled with brown sugar and ironed flat. Don’t be fooled by the artfully shabby decor at casual dining spot De Superette 00 32 9 278 08 08, desuperette.be because the food here comes courtesy of Belgian star chef Kobe Desramaults.

Ghent with Kids

I didn’t know what traditional Flemish food was but Mémé Gusta delivers, with excellent children’s options and varieties of main dishes too. The stews are delicious (I opted for the vegetarian option), we tried Belgian wine, and we finished off with a creme brûlée as the kids tucked into the children’s dessert of chocolate profiteroles. Thoroughly recommend this relaxed but delicious joint.

This because they serve classical Flemish dishes, exactly like our grandmothers used to prepare them. When I tell you I have eaten my way around town in search of the best Belgian Stew, I’m not lying and honestly the one from Meme Gusta is one of the very best. Same goes for their homemade cheese and shrimp croquets.

How to spend a weekend in Ghent, Belgium's foodie destination

In a homely space decorated with family photographs, Jan Hendricks and Nele Smet pay homage to the latter’s grandmother’s handwritten recipes in the bistro named after her: Mémé Gusta (12). There is real depth of flavour in the classic “beef” stew, which, confusingly in Ghent, is made with pig cheeks braised in beer.
