We agree it's a good plan for breakfast or brunch, to munch away on a Lucy (smoked salmon, goat cheese, arugula, and walnuts) or an Olivia (bacon, avocado, oak leaf lettuce, cream cheese, and black pepper) in the cozy setting of this retro-inspired place. If you're more of a sweet tooth or are craving a healthy lunch, Sanseveria had got you covered in that department, too, with a variety of home made soups and quiches.

Bagels, bagels, bagels; Sanseveria is heaven for lovers of circle-formed dough with a hole in the middle, cream cheese and extra little toppings. This bagel salon creates the most original of bagels in a vintage living room interior. Definitely try the one with crayfish, avocado, leek and cream cheese.

Some great places: Café Vlissinghe is a beautiful 500 year old pub, where you can get simple but decent meals and has a nice garden in summer, cafe L’Estaminet has the best spaghetti in town, Sanseveria Bagel Salon offers very yummy bagels, ’t Brugs Pitahuis has the best shoarma in Bruges and grand cafe De Republiek is a great bistro and has a wonderful backyard garden, great on summer days!. Children can enter all pubs in Belgium if accompanied by their parents (or an adult).

The thing my Bruges guide has always lacked, with the exception of Kottee Kaffee, is places to go for a light lunch. Not a light three course lunch, or a set menu, but a properly light lunch. So in January 2025 I endeavoured to redress that by heading to Sanseveria Bagelsalon, a place I’d heard of many times but never got round to visiting (there’s also a brunch place people rave about called That’s Toast, but in truth I’ve never been able to get past the name).

Restaurant review #78 – Sanseveria Bagelsalon is a cosy little place in the city center of Bruges. It’s just a 5 minute walk from the Burg and City hall, and near the famous Rozenhoedkaai, where many tourists align to take that famous snapshot of Bruges’ canals and the Belfry. I visited Sanseveria Bagelsalon with a friend a couple of weeks ago.

This popular bagel shop came highly recommended by one of the women working at the front desk when we checked in. And actually, we were the last people they allowed in that morning without a reservation, so I recommend making one!. The Madison bagel seemed to be their best seller, and Steve said it was delicious.

This little brunch cafe occupies a former shop with an old tiled floor and polished wooden counter. The interior is decorated in a retro Flemish style with vintage crockery, a gramophone and those prickly house plants known as sanseveria. The menu lists a range of bagels, along with apple waffles and scones.

With 2 branches, one in Bruges and the other in Ostend, Sanseveria is a thriving and hip concept. New York bagels with a Burgundian twist are served in Instaproof living room where you can have breakfast, brunch and lunch to your heart’s content. You even imagine yourself in some American big city!

You should absolutely have breakfast at Sanseveria Bagelsalon. This quirky restaurant was recommended to us, and now I am passing the recommendation on. This breakfast joint specializes in New York bagel sandwiches with an impressive selection of vegetarian and vegan offerings.
