Reviews Summary

Le Trappiste is highly praised for its unique medieval cellar atmosphere and an outstanding selection of Belgian beers. Diners love the historic ambiance, the vast beer choices, and the knowledgeable staff who offer great recommendations. Some visitors noted that the space can feel cramped and the ventilation might be an issue during busy or hot periods.

"One of the best places we encountered on a weekend visit to Bruges. Id seen the bar had been recommended often however the medieval style basement was part of the attraction
that came across very authentic and in keeping with the city itself.
There was a great (and very large!) selection of beers and some very good ones available on tap. It's a great place to try more unusual beers too as there's some which do not appear to be available as often elsewhere."

Adam Gagliani

"If you are in the city and you don’t go to this bar, you will be sad. We were in Belgium for 12 days and this is the absolute best place to drink beer. Totally fun inside with lots of people having a great time and as you can see from the photos, it’s a really interesting room. The people working there know all about beer and it is served at the perfect temperature in a specific glass for the beer you are getting. This is a must see. One note is that the hours on Google shows 5 PM but during the time we were there in mid May, it was opening at 6 PM. Also, you don’t have to pay a premium to get a beer here, it was the same price or better than any other place in town."

Scott Baker

"Interesting old cellar with a large amount of different beers! Beer can be tasted before ordering, which delighted us. Buckwheat beer is great! The space is very interesting. We were there when it was very hot and ventilation was a bit of a problem..."

Google Review

Some of the beers, especially certain Trappist ales, can be over 9% alcohol content and are quite potent.

While primarily a beer bar, they also offer cider.

Le Trappiste is described as loud, lively, and buzzing with energy, making it less ideal for quiet catch-ups.

The best bars and pubs in Bruges

This is splendid beer lovers’ bar, set in a large and beautiful 13th-century, brick-arched, candlelit cellar that was once a cooper’s workshop (which coincides with the name of the street). It offers 20 choice and varied, mainly Belgian beers on tap, from dark and rich stouts to light and heady blondes, plus a large menu of bottled beer, including, of course, the famous Trappist beers. It’s a good place to take up their offer of a 'tasting paddle': five 15cl glasses of different beers, slotted into a long wooden board.

They don’t shout about it, but if you turn a corner you might find one TV screen showing sports - mainly football - live at Le Trappiste. This quirky bar is smack bang in the city centre, hidden away in a 13th century underground crypt that glows in candlelight while serving a huge variety of local beers on tap AND sneakily showing live sport!. The interiors at Le Trappiste are like nowhere else in Bruges and well worth checking out even just for one of their specially brewed Belgian Triple house beers, Abbott.

Where to Eat during your Day Trip To Bruges

If you are organizing your trip to Belgium, whether you like it or not, you will end up tasting (and enjoying) its craft beers (I didn't even know there were so many different types of beer!). Summer or winter, a good cold beer will warm you up, especially if you drink it at Le Trappiste. Its medieval tavern atmosphere (which is 800 years old!!!) and the beauty of its walls and stone arches will make you travel back in time, forget what time it is and enjoy a good beer as the Belgians do.
