This is splendid beer lovers’ bar, set in a large and beautiful 13th-century, brick-arched, candlelit cellar that was once a cooper’s workshop (which coincides with the name of the street). It offers 20 choice and varied, mainly Belgian beers on tap, from dark and rich stouts to light and heady blondes, plus a large menu of bottled beer, including, of course, the famous Trappist beers. It’s a good place to take up their offer of a 'tasting paddle': five 15cl glasses of different beers, slotted into a long wooden board.

A stone’s throw from the Grote Markt lies the youngest pub on this list, in the most Old World venue imaginable. An eight-century-old cellar on the Kuipersstraat has been home to Le Trappiste for three years now. With its abundance of small tables covered in candle wax and its exposed brick arches bringing the charm, the place could immediately count on a loyal customer base.

This lovely pub is in the cryptlike cellar of an 800-year-old building, the perfect setting for sampling some of its many hundreds of different Belgian and global ales.

Situated at Kuipersstraat 33, 8000 Bruges, Belgium, Le Trappiste serves over 100 bottled beers and 15 beers on tap, with a focus on quality Belgian beers as well as rare international offerings. The specialty drinks at Le Trappiste include their own house triple ale called Abbott, specially brewed by the Van Steenberge brewery, as well as unique microbrews from the UK, New Zealand and Japan that are hard to find elsewhere.

They don’t shout about it, but if you turn a corner you might find one TV screen showing sports - mainly football - live at Le Trappiste. This quirky bar is smack bang in the city centre, hidden away in a 13th century underground crypt that glows in candlelight while serving a huge variety of local beers on tap AND sneakily showing live sport!. The interiors at Le Trappiste are like nowhere else in Bruges and well worth checking out even just for one of their specially brewed Belgian Triple house beers, Abbott.
