It's a modern spot but decorated in traditional pub-style, and occupies an old step-gabled tavern built in 1699. It serves some 400 kinds of beer, with 20 of them on draft. The kitchen also serves an extensive menu of snacks and Belgian dishes, many of them cooked in beer, including the classic beef stew, vlaamse stoofcarbonnaden.

At Cambrinus, an old pub with over 400 beers, we met another English beer coinsurer, from Lincolnshire, who swears that Westvleteren, a brewery founded in 1838 at the Trappist Abbey of Saint Sixtus in Vleteren, Belgium, is one of best beers in the world. They had it in the bottle there for about 19 Euro, so we booked in for lunch the next day to try carbonnade, the famous Flemish stew made with beef/lamb and beer and ordered a tasting paddle of their best draft beers. The portions were huge and hearty – we tried the fried cheese, carbonnade and homemade meatballs – and the staff were very friendly.

The legendary personality of Cambrinus, also labeled as John I Primus, Duke of Brabant, is often mentioned in the songs of students as the King of Beer, and is viewed by many as the inventor of this beverage. Attesting to his status, the eponymous bar in Brugge carries image of Cambrinus, depicted as a statue sat upon a large beer keg, with a foaming mug in his hand, on the corner of the façade, and the portrait thereof with a lady etched into a glass window. The bar itself is housed in a historic building dated 1699, which makes it all the more must-go destination for any beer lover.

If there was one bier-brasserie we visited which really epitomised everything that was great about Bruges, it had to be Cambrinus, located on a side-street just off the town’s main Markt square. Boasting over 400 varieties of Belgium’s favourite nectar, Cambrinus’ enormous beer menu is a tribute to the god of beer himself… more an encyclopaedic anthology than your typical pub menu card.

As soon as I saw it I knew it was exactly what we were looking for: A huge selection of local beers for Ryan and hearty, affordable local food for the two of us. We were able to employ a favorite strategy of ours for affordable dining: One of us orders the value priced Table D'Hote, with both of us enjoying the appetizer and dessert, and the other just orders one main course.

I make it a point to get to Cambrinus for a meal and a few beers here every time I come through Bruges. I struggled with whether to categorize it as a bar or a restaurant. Even though the lacquered wooden bar is always ready for you to hang around with a beer or two, the massive menu swayed me to go with the restaurant.

Incredibly popular throughout the day, reservations are required in the evenings to ensure seating to sample some of their 400 beers on offer. A Bruges staple and not to be missed.

Cambrinus bar is an unmissable drinking institution with hundreds of beers to choose from, all served in their own individual and quirky glasses and, asking nicely, I manage to get some free promotional games from McChouffe, a beer brand. What a bonus – that’s all my souvenirs acquired for free.

Brasserie Cambrinus is a stone’s throw away from Grote Markt. It was recommended by a Belgian as the coronation of the best of Bruges: yummy food, good atmosphere and above all, lots of beer specialties. The service is good, the atmosphere vibrant, and the place crowded.

Bierbrasserie has over 300 brews you can try and is quite reasonably priced too. The ambiance is warm and comfortable and the helpings of appetizers and main course are quite generous. This place is known for the Eels on toast and potato croquettes with apple sauce.
