Situated in Vienna’s MuseumsQuartier, a stone’s throw from institutions like the Leopold Museum and the MUMOK (Museum of Modern Art Ludwig Foundation Vienna), you’ll find Glacis Beisl – an aesthetically modern Austrian bistro with a sun-drenched outdoor space shaded by walnut trees. The menu is concise, offering classic dishes like satiating grammelknödel (potato dumplings) with sauerkraut, fried black pudding with red cabbage, and palatschinken (Austrian crêpes smothered in sticky-sweet home-made marmalade). “With their simple but perfect menu and their focus on orange and natural wines,” Hittinger recommends a trip to Glacis Beisl for their Austrian drinks and cuisine.

When I was in Vienna in March, I had trout at Glacis Beisl in the Museum Quarter (but it was very bony and I didn't do the world's greatest job of pulling the bones out), a delicious seafood appetizer at Steierereck and almost ordered the fish (pike perch, I believe) at Zum Weissen Rauchfangkehrer--I saw some other diners having it and they seemed quite pleased. None of those dishes were fried. Last year, I had a beautiful grilled trout at Meinl am Graben--one of my best fish meals ever (this year I had steak).

Hidden in the heart of the MuseumsQuartier is Glacis Beisl, with a pretty outdoor garden, serving unpretentious Viennese specialities like goulash, followed by Austrian-style crêpes, known as palatschinken, with homemade apricot jam.

Glacis Beisl is a slightly more modern offering of Viennese cuisine with a fantastic Austrian wine list from their partner vineyards (everything we tasted was excellent) and who take extreme care to use local suppliers – in the evenings, it is really worth booking a table which you can do online. I had a decent salmon tartare to start, ut the real star was J’s cream of parsnip soup, which was one of the best we’d ever tasted. He adored his perfectly cooked rack of lamb with bacon wrapped green beans and a root vegetable gratin, and I was equally enamoured by my Polish pierogi filled with curd cheese, though after that lunch I only managed half the dish, coming as they did deliciously loaded up with butter, sour cream and chives.

My favourite for lunch when I’m visiting the galleries of the MuseumsQuartier: just a hop and a skip over a little bridge behind the Leopold Museum and down to the entrance, which opens into a vine-garlanded garden. A restaurant has been here since the 1940s, set on the old city walls, but it’s now headed by Paul Bodner, a natural wine enthusiast, hence the extensive menu of biodynamic and orange wines. A beisl, by the way, is a cross between a bistro and a pub – a place to dip into for a glass of wine and snack or a proper meal and a good example of gemütlich, the Austrian version of hygge.

Finding a gorgeous outdoor space to indulge in a delicious bottle of wine can be a difficult feat in urban settings – especially in neighbourhoods as busy as Vienna’s Museumsquartier. Thankfully, Glacis Beisl offers an excellent reprieve. Loved for its classic bottle selection, tasty by-the-glass offerings and authentic (and affordable) Viennese cuisine, this plant-filled oasis offers the perfect place to escape the hustle and bustle of the city’s crowded streets and unwind with something delicious.

With one of the most beautiful gardens in Vienna, set in the MuseumsQuartier district, another industry favorite spot is Glacis Beisl, which offers Viennese and classic Austrian dishes. A quietly babbling fountain, abundant flowers, and even more greenery make the outdoor dining area a little oasis in the middle of Vienna. At the Glacis Beisl, the chefs give the Old Viennese cuisine a modern touch.

About the Schanigarten: This is definetely one of the nicest gardens with food and drinks being served in it, in the city. Sunk in a little moat-looking space next to the MQ, the Glacis Beisl garden is full of lots of trees, bushes, and flowers – this place puts the ‘Garten’ in Schanigarten. The seating area is more than generous and the atmosphere can only be defined as ‘ahhhhhhh-worth’.

If you’re spending an afternoon in Vienna’s museum quarter (which is on our Tips for Solo Travel in Austria) and plan on working up an appetite, stop by Glacis Beisl. While there’s tons of competition in the area, Glacis Beisl tops the list. You’ll be forking out around €20 ($22), but it’s one of those schnitzels that dwarfs the size of the plate, so feel free to share with a friend.

Apart from Schnitzel there´s also a variety of other Austrian and international dishes to choose from and I have never been disappointed so far.

The Glacis Beisl combines the best aspects of Vienna: down-to-earth cuisine, served in one of the most most beautiful guest gardens of the city. It’s this cute restaurant near the museum area and has a fantastic outdoor patio. The mushroom goulash and the pork dumplings are one of the best meals I’ve ever had. Or go to the Mayer am Pfarrplatz – farther out of the city but also amazing!
