And the interpretation of Mozart Torte at popular traditional Viennese patisserie Aida is two layers of chocolate sponge with a thin layer of bright-green pistachio marzipan in between, covered in chocolate ganache and topped with a small chocolate disc with Mozart’s little face on. For whatever reason, it seems Mozart equals chocolate, pistachio and marzipan.

I would recommend that he order the apple streudel (the best I've ever had)or the eclairs. Also really delish is the chocolate soldiers.

The silver medal goes to the Sachertorte at Aida, a chain of historical patisseries where you can breathe the ancient atmosphere of the pastry shops of yesteryear. The counter of lavish desserts is a feast for the eyes: Black Forest cake, strudel, Aida cake (a cake with countless layers of chocolate mousse), the Mozart cake with sweet cream and marzipan, the Biedermeier cake (tried it, it was a delicious harmony of different textures and flavors), and then the queen herself: Sacher. Aida’s is a bit drier than Hotel Sacher’s, but the chocolate glazing and the apricot jam (which is plentiful, both at the center and right under the surface of the glazing) are particularly delicious.

The best one to visit is at Singerstrasse 1, a prime location next to Stephensplatz, just steps away from St. Stephen’s Cathedral. It is a popular café to visit, because of it is pink interior and decorations and second level seating with views over the city streets. It gets mixed reviews, with slow service and a mediocre menu, but if you are passing by and want to take a break in a colorful café, pop into Aida.

If you go to Aida Cafe, their menu lists all the coffees they serve with pictures to represent the size of cup you will be getting and a breakdown of what will go into the cup to make the coffee. The coffees will vary in strength (espresso to milk ratio), normal milk or frothed milk or steamed milk and so on. If you are a little overwhelmed by all the options, I would recommend sticking with a cappuccino.

The name may be familiar to US visitors, since Aida famously supplied American troops with doughnuts and ice cream during the post-WWII occupation by the Allies. A large chain with many locations across the city (and at the airport), Aida’s pink branding has become part of the Vienna cityscape. Aida has a bit of a hectic environment and lacks the charm of some of the other cafes, but its low prices and quick service put it on my recommended list. At only 4 euros or so for a slice of Aida cake, you can sample a couple for the price of less than one slice at a fancier cafe.

So I’ve already talked about getting cake at Cafe Sacher, but if you have a bit of a sweet tooth and you’re looking for something tasty and more affordable, there’s Aida. This is a chain with multiple locations across the city and the cafes are easy to spot because they’re all pink. We went to their location in Neubau and feasted on cake!

After walking just 10-20 minutes in Vienna central, you’re guaranteed to spot at least one Aida Cafe. We’re not recommending Aida Cafe because there are so many, we’re recommending it because it’s that good!. This is a great place to try the famous sachertorte, although you can try the original at Hotel Sacher for a decent price.

While Aida is not exactly a traditional coffeehouse, I had to include it. Aida is home to the best apfelstrudel in Vienna, in my opinion. The pink interior of this local chain makes for a lovely setting, and the coffee and cakes are all wonderful.
