Reviews Summary

Café Tomaselli is celebrated for its rich history, charming atmosphere, and delightful traditional Austrian pastries and coffee. While many praise the excellent service and picturesque setting, some reviewers mention issues with inattentive staff or warmth on hotter days. Overall, it's a highly recommended historic gem in Salzburg.

"To start with, this cafe opens at 7 am which is amazing if you need to have breakfast early in the morning. The place is beautiful inside and outside, service is top notch, the food and presentation of it - classy. I was going there every day and was never disappointed. Definitely worth checking it out!"

AM am

"After our Sound of Music tour, we were so happy to find Café Tomaselli right in the middle of St. Stephen’s Square. This place is charming and filled with energy, and we found a balcony seat on the second floor — perfect for people-watching!

We had kombucha tea, passion fruit soda, and apple strudel, all light and refreshing. Service was friendly, though there’s no AC, so it can get warm on hot days. Still, a great spot to recharge and soak in Salzburg’s historic vibe."

regis kwong

"Great location at a beautiful, historic cafe. Our group enjoyed a traditional breakfast of eggs, pastries, and coffee. Wish the service was friendlier. We ordered three omelets with cheese (no ham) and one plain omelet. When server arrived with two omelets that had ham, getting two of our orders wrong, he tried to argue with us over the error."

About Café Tomaselli: It’s said that the Turks left behind bags of coffee beans during the failed Siege of Vienna in 1683 which quickly led to a thriving coffee culture through Austria. Frenchmen Johann Fontaine opened the first cafe in Salzburg on nearby Goldgasse in the year 1703, which was moved to the present location in 1764 and acquired by Carl Tomaselli in 1852. This makes the historic Café Tomaselli in the heart of Medieval Salzburg’s main marketplace, Old Market ( Alter Markt), the oldest cafe in Austria.
