Sixpenny, my go-to spot for special occasions, blew me away again! It’s my second visit since 2019, and they’re still rocking Sydney’s food scene with their commitment to local produce and sustainability. Their homemade sourdough is absolutely a game-changer and might just be the best sourdough I’ve ever had. Made from leftover bread ground into crumbs, and enhanced with recycled coffee beans and ...

Sixpenny is a chance to indulge in beautiful innovative dishes ⬇️⁣ ⁣ Be prepared for a lengthy dining adventure 🕔, as the entire experience can span 3 to 4 hours with some pauses between courses. For this reason, I recommend exploring their extensive drinks menu 😜, which includes alcoholic and non-alcoholic options to suit all preferences 🍸⁣ ⁣ I particularly recommend the Sixpenny's Rhubarb & Rose...

Reviews Summary

Sixpenny is lauded for its exceptional modern Australian tasting menus, expertly crafted with locally sourced and fermented ingredients. Diners rave about the outstanding service, the intimate atmosphere, and the passionate chefs who enhance the dining journey. While the experience is highly praised, some find the extended duration of the meal to be lengthy.

"I booked sixpenny for my husbands birthday. It was the most unique dining experience I have had. The food was very unique but tasted delicious and there were 7 courses. Each time a new dish was given to us it was passionately explained to us by either a waiter or chef. The waiters were very friendly. You dint actually get the menu until you leave, in a sealed envelope which is cool. They gave us a very cute birthday card too. The food was very fresh. I only found the 3 hour sitting too long but it was a great experience."

"As someone who loves to look at the menu prior and knowing what to expect, this was exciting. George and the team were so welcoming, truly made the night special.
The atmosphere was cozy and comfortable, and the food was so beautiful! I will be dreaming of the XO butter for weeks to come.
Usually we never get dessert, but my goodness, every single one was phenomenal.
Overall a fabulous experience and totally worth the money. Highly recommend, we will absolutely return! Thank you Six Penny 💛🙏🏻"

"I spent some time deciding whether to give 5 stars, and in the end, I believe this restaurant deserves it.

First, the service is excellent—truly top-level. The staff were attentive, professional, and very accommodating of my dietary restrictions due to allergies. They even offered thoughtful replacements, which I greatly appreciated.

Second, the food itself was very good, though I did find the portions on the smaller side. I probably could have enjoyed one more course to feel fully satisfied.

Third, regarding beverages, there is room for improvement. The original sake I received had been opened for over a week and had developed a sour, off flavor. Once I mentioned it, the staff promptly replaced it with a freshly opened bottle, which was much better.

Lastly, the wine pairing could have been stronger. 🍷 It only began with the second course, and the dessert pairing felt a bit heavy with two intense pours (a bitter and a tawny). It might flow better if the pairing started from the first course, and perhaps just one thoughtful pour carried through both desserts—maybe even swapping in tea for balance.

Overall, the combination of outstanding service and quality food makes this restaurant worth a visit, and with a little fine-tuning on the beverage program, it could be even more exceptional."

The Best Restaurants in Sydney Right Now

One of Australia’s most cherished restaurants, tucked away in an unassuming Stanmore corner terrace. Why we love it: Even though this is about as big-ticket as restaurants get, the intimate and unpretentious mood will make you feel right at home. Chef Dan Puskas hits it for six with the onslaught of single-bite snacks that kick off his considered tasting menu, and follows it through to the end with his stupidly good signature dessert: a housemade mead vinegar custard with raspberries and strawberry consommé.

10 spectacular Sydney dining experiences

Sixpenny sits on a quiet corner of the Inner West suburb of Stanmore, neighbouring Newtown, but chef and owner Daniel Puskas’s talent speaks volumes. The award-winning chef has the maximum three hats in the authoritative Good Food Guide, and his tasting menu begins with superior snacks (hemp seed tarts with pear), advances into more substantial territory (sugar loaf cabbage with abalone and clams) and ends on striking desserts (walnut ice-cream with caramelised banana).

It’s all about elevated, interesting, produce-driven fare, fine dining without pomp and pretence, where every little detail – from tasting menu to hospitality – is golden. Oysters are always a good idea, here served with a house-fermented rockmelon and black pepper vinaigrette (head chef Tony Schifilliti has a penchant for fermentation).

Two years into his tenure, chef Tony Schifilliti’s fervent interest in fermentation has reinvigorated Sixpenny, dovetailing with chef-owner Dan Puskas vision seamlessly. Just look at a dainty tartlet of goat’s curd and Roman beans, jolted by a dressing flavoured with preserved lime and an egg-white garum. Or a fatty tranche of roasted Berkshire pork loin, rubbed in galangal-fragrant fermented pork paste, and served with a carrot cooked in barley koji oil.
