Reviews Summary

Henry Deane is celebrated for its absolutely breathtaking Sydney Harbour views and its sophisticated ambiance, making it a highlight of any visit. Guests rave about the creative cocktails and delicious share plates, complemented by friendly and attentive service. While generally positive, some reviews mention limited food choices and occasional inconsistencies in food quality, alongside a note about added gratuity fees.

"Great experience!
I didn’t know about the view before coming and it was a great surprise! The food selection is unique with different flavors than what you can experience somewhere else in Sydney. The service was friendly, we had a great table! The Venu have such a good decoration. I can’t wait to come back!"

"Seeing Vivid Sydney doesn’t have to be a punish. You can make a small targeted excursion to take in Legs On The Wall’s Endling in Barangaroo Reserve, and still feel like you’ve seen a lot. It’s a solo performance in an aerial birdcage with an environmental theme, created by Joshua Thomson. The 45-minute show, which teams audiovisual elements with aerial performance on slings, silks and wires, runs six times a night with only a few minutes in between, so it doesn’t matter when you get there between 6pm and festival close 11pm.

Team your foray with a drink or meal on the top floor of the Hotel Palisade. The glass-box bar, Henry Deane, will show you exactly why long-term Millers Point social housing residents were driven out to fund (so far) 1902 units of social housing across the state. The coveted peninsula position will have you feeling on top of the world as you take in 270 degree views from Barangaroo and the ANZAC bridge all the way to the Sydney Harbour Bridge and beyond. Despite the jaw-dropping views, the bar prices aren’t wound-you; the food and cocktails are good; and staff are warm and friendly to all comers. It clearly hasn’t forgotten at its heart, it’s still a public house in a suburb quarried by convicts.

The Smooth Criminal ($24) teaming Del Maguey mezcal, Pampelle (a ruby grapefruit aperitif), sake, Chartreuse and lime seems very appropriate. Agave Love ($24) combines Del Vida mezcal with Epsolon tequila, verjus and pomegranate tea with a pink fruit-filled ice cube. You can also drink a nice Margaret River Chardonnay—the 2023 Voyager Estate ‘Coastal’ Chardonnay ($18/glass)—from a list with a good number of bottles around eighty bucks.

Tidy little logs of potato hash topped with piped abalone sauce and smoked pork dust ($22/4) are your drinking snacks, alongside raw scallop and prawn medallions, capsicum and lemon myrtle ($39/6) served in the scallop shell. Raw fish ceviche ($28) made using kingfish, was delicate and palate refreshing against coconut, green pepper oil and pickled cucumber. Beautifully rendered glazed pork belly ($28) served sliced in a puddle of tasty glaze with pickled grapes for punctuation was equally good. A generously proportioned code lettuce salad ($19) kept up the surprises with a tangy charred tomatillo dressing, olive and a chilli-kick from spiced almonds. From a short, one-page menu, this felt like a lot of hits. The only question I was left with, was why the Sydney Harbour Bridge, when viewed from Western Sydney, is only half lit? Come on Vivid, us Westies deserve the same attention as our richer Eastern Suburbs cousins."

"Food was very nice and different which was cool. The standout was the chickpea and carrot snacks, they had a bunch of things going on and surprised us a lot! Everything else had lots of flavour but still lacked something and didn’t really have much variation? All tasted quite similar. Quite large portions though which was nice. The rhubarb crumble was really good too :)
Service was a bit tainted as we were running quite late to our booking (absolutely our fault). As I’ve worked as a host myself I was very stressed about it and I’d tried calling over five times to see if we could change the time, if they been ok for us to still make it, or just let them know we had to cancel. But no response so just decided to go and ask if it was still an option and leave if not. They did hold it for us which was lovely but understandably moved to a different seat. However, they were still quite blunt and cold, which was obvious and off putting- I absolutely understand being annoyed, but the lack of hospitality made a difference throughout the whole night.
The view was absolutely gorgeous, and there was great music, the live band was really cool.
I’d like to come back, maybe to try a few different dishes and to give the service another go to see if it was just a one off experience by our circumstances or not."

The 13 best Sydney bars

Named after the engineer who built the Hotel Palisade, Henry Deane is a split-level cocktail bar and restaurant that takes over the two top floors of the heritage hotel. The top floor, with its expansive harbour and bridge views through floor-to-ceiling glass windows, parquetry floors, pink leather lounges and marble tables, is a winner even before the drinks arrive. The Negroni has a clarified orange ice sphere that intravenously leaks more flavour the longer you sip it.

Sydney's best rooftop bars with stunning views

Henry Deane: Here's another gorgeous haunt replete with history. Dating back to 1915, Palisade Hotel was one of the tallest buildings in the city when it was first built. Exactly 100 years later - in mid 2015 - it relaunched after a significant refurb, with a pub on the ground floor, eight stunning guest rooms (yes, you can stay here, too) on the second and third floors, a cocktail lounge on the fourth floor and - the ultimate jewel in its crown - the Henry Deane rooftop bar on the top floor.
