Sassy and sophisticated, this two-storey sandstone bar with its exposed rock wall and silky timber beams boasts the kind of rustic luxe that contestants on TV series Alone dream about while braziers and comfy couches on the Salamanca strip encourage outdoor drinking all year round. The bar team whip up cocktail classics like the creamy Espresso Martini along with more eccentric offerings – think ‘Fairy Bread’ with Hartshorn Sheep Whey vodka and miso syrup or the ‘Two Headed Zombie’ with Charles Oates brandy and absinthe. Good to know - the $10 bao baskets are best in show.

The Denis another bar fairly new bar in Salamanca (at least, I don’t think it was open on my last trip home) which is all about Tasmanian products – which I love!. You can even see it reflected in the decor, with Huon pine on the door and a Tassie Devil mosaic in the open kitchen upstairs!. We only popped in here for a drink one night (they have some lovely cocktails made with Tasmanian products), but they also do sharing-plate-type food with quite a few Korean dishes.

The cocktails at his modern bar in Salamanca Place are made from unusual ingredients, perhaps a mojito with dill-infused white rum, pomegranate, lime juice and sage. Elderflower and banana liqueurs, agave syrup and pineapple and lime juices are combined with whisky to make Thy Gold Leaf. The Den's wine and beer lists are replete with Tasmanian favourites to accompany a menu of Asian-style small plates, bao, fries and salads.

The Den opened its doors in late December 2017, and to no surprise, has quickly become a favourite with the locals. This intimately-lit bar is located in the city’s historic Salamanca Place, and sets the mood as soon as you step into its luxurious sandstone and timber space. The menu here is short, sharp and tasty, suited for sharing, but it’s their selection of classy cocktails where The Den truly shines.

This Salamanca hot spot has fire pits, outdoor dining options, a warm timber and leather interior with an upstairs lounge bar. Plenty of local options to sample a wide range of beverages and the sharing plates are Asian inspired and very morish. Watch this space turn into a dance floor on Friday and Saturday nights after 9pm, a 7 minute walk from the Hotel Grand Chancellor at 63 Salamanca Place.
