Jackman & McRoss is a highly regarded bakery cafe celebrated for its exceptional pies, pastries, and bread, all crafted with quality ingredients in a charming historic setting. Diners rave about the unique scallop pie and the delicious array of baked goods. While the atmosphere and friendly service are consistently praised, some reviews note occasional issues with coffee quality or busy periods.

"Hobart must-visit for pie lovers! It is is a true gem tucked into the charming streets of Battery Point. The moment you walk in, you're greeted by the aroma of freshly baked pastries and a cabinet full of tempting treats. I tried one of their pies and it was absolutely excellent—flaky, golden pastry with a rich, flavorful filling that hit all the right notes. The atmosphere is cozy and welcoming, and the staff are friendly and efficient even during busy hours. Whether you're after a quick bite or a leisurely brunch, this bakery delivers on quality and charm. Highly recommend!"

"Had the scallop pie here and it was absolutely delicious – rich, fresh and perfectly baked. The coffee was also excellent and paired so well with it.

The staff were really thoughtful and kind, even helping us cut the pie into two since we were sharing. Such a nice touch that made the experience even better.

We also saw a rainbow while dining here :)"

"Wow, wow and wow. This Bakery was recommended to us and we are so glad we took the time to find it and enjoy breakfast there this morning. The location is literally out of this world, it's like you have been transported to another moment in time. I enjoyed the beef and red wine pie, my wife had the goats cheese, caramelised onion, sundried tomatoes and spinach Danish. We also indulged in the custard tart. We are not exaggerating when we say this food was absolutely delectable and this is the benchmark for the quality of food! Never had anything close to these flavours and quality."

The 5 best bakeries in Hobart for fresh bread and pastries

This humble yet upmarket bakery in Battery Point is one of the best places to go for a hearty breakfast in Tassie. It’s worth shouting out their scallop and wakame pie, filled with five or six juicy morsels in a creamy, curry sauce. You’ll also find Jackman and McRoss’ fresh pastries and bread on their breakfast menu in the form of smoked salmon bagels; egg and bacon paninis; and brie, bacon, mushroom and semi-dried tomato croissants.

It may sound like a firm of city solicitors, but Jackman & McRoss is actually Hobart’s most loved bakery café, and one with a distinct European influence. Come here for your morning croissant and latte, or something more substantial, perhaps soup, meat pies and savoury tarts. My favourite is the spiced roast vegetable pastie served with house made relish.

Best Breakfast and Brunch Places in Hobart

Once you’ve got back to the city, grab yourself some breakfast at Machine Laundry Cafe or the famous Jackman & McRoss and slowly stroll towards the preserved town of Battery Point, a quaint suburb with cottages, cute roundabouts and historical landmarks. Go shopping on Liverpool street, roam around Elizabeth Street Pier and if you love ciders, visit Willie Smiths Apple Shed in Huon Valley (30 minutes from the city) for lunch and a refreshing cider!. Baking Business

Locals have a long and proud history of celebrating their farmers

Located in a rustic, heritage-listed building at Battery Point, Jackman and McRoss has evolved from a hole-in-the-wall retailer into a fully-fledged, dine-in bakery. Its relaxed vibe and inviting layout is particularly impressive when you consider co-founders Chris Jackman, and Nerida and Justin McRoss personally renovated the 19th century building into a functional bakery in just five weeks. Producing homemade pies, pastries and breads entirely from scratch and using only the best local ingredients, Jackman and McRoss keeps the spirit of old Tasmania alive.

Top ten places in Hobart to buy food

Bread is a staple of life in Australia but that might change to pasta or rice if all you could get was the packaged, sliced, tasteless fairy floss that is offered up by the supermarkets. Fortunately, in Tasmania, we have Jackman and McRoss to restore faith in the bakers’ craft. They have two retail outlets, one in Battery Point and the other on the outskirts of the CBD, where you can buy their excellent sourdough bread and the incomparable sixteen-hour loaf.

Two bakeries and a half-laundromat – three cafes in Hobart, Tasmania

It’s a fantastic bakery cafe in a quiet street in Battery Point with a wonderful assortment of light meals, little cakes, tarts and slices, and crusty loaves on shelves dusty with flour. I chose a chocolate eclair filled with fluffy cream, and Jac chose a chocolate Frangelico tart, with a white chocolate Frangelico mousse in chocolate ganache-lined pastry, topped with crunchy chopped hazelnuts. To go with our sweet treats, two cups of strong, creamy coffee.
