A new bar tucked behind the Fremantle Markets, Emily Taylor is named after a 19th-century ship that brought Asian spices to Fremantle before being wrecked off the coast of Perth. Under executive chef Aldren Teo, the kitchen taps into this heritage – mixing Southeast Asian flavours with uniquely West Australian produce. Try the lobster dumplings infused with Manjimup truffle (“a modern twist on traditional hakau Cantonese dumplings”, says Teo); roast duck brushed in local bush honey and plattered with mandarin pancakes; Geraldton kingfish ceviche cured in a sweet-chilli coconut water; or charred Stirling Ranges beef ribs paired with crunchy sambal matah.

There are dozens of delicious dishes, but according to Director of Hospitality Tim Buckton, the must-tries are “the peking duck, lobster dumplings, lamb ribs, and of course, our incredible curries. When it comes to Fremantle dining, the vibrant, courtyard bar and restaurant, Emily Taylor should be at the top of your foodie bucket list. Being an extension of the Warders Hotel, a boutique hotel in the old limestone cottage that once housed the Fremantle Warders, it pays homage to Fremantle’s rich historical past whilst delighting many with its vibrant food and drinks.

I’m going to say yes because I feel as though excluding Emily Taylor would be a huge disservice to the GF community!. They’re open from 9am on Saturday and Sunday and this is to offer a yum cha menu which includes, you guessed it, gluten-free dumplings!. A few non-dumpling dishes are also available as GF options but the most exciting offering at Emily Taylor has to be their famous lobster and truffle dumplings.

It’s Friday evening when I sample lobster-filled dumplings and crispy spring rolls at Emily Taylor. This buzzy bar and kitchen, part of the Warders Hotel, honours its two-fold namesake: a sailing ship named after the wife of the builder who transported spices between South-East Asia and Fremantle at a time when Aussie food was known to be rather bland. But nothing about Emily Taylor is dull.

Every weekend, Emily Taylor serves up brunch Yum Cha style to her guests, and trust me when I tell you it’s one of the best spots for bottomless brunch in Perth. Bottomless is $69 for two people, which gets you any four dishes to share plus prosecco to wash it down with. That’s a pretty incredible deal if you ask me!

Hidden away behind tall limestone walls is one of Fremantle’s most vibrant restaurants. Emily Taylor’s courtyard is a worthy destination in and of itself, perched under the purple jacaranda blossoms and technicolour umbrellas – but paired with those juicy dumplings?. How could you stay away?

Lobster stands as a luxury, yet Emily Taylor have further enhanced its opulence with local Manjimup truffles creating one of the most lavish dumplings Perth has to offer. Brought together with prawn and sweet aromatic soy, it’s a must before diving into the rest of the flavour forward menu.

Our waitress Saive excelled in her level of service in every way. We explained our daughter was coeliac and asked if this could be catered for if we came back and she provided us with a handwritten list of items on the menu that would be suitable. Saive went above and beyond!

Emily Taylor | Open for Yum Cha brunch from 9 am, and you have the option to go bottomless for two hours for $85pp from 9.30 am. Their a la carte menu will be available from 11.30 am - late for lunch or dinner plus live music in the garden from 1 pm.
