Reviews Summary

Such and Such offers a vibrant atmosphere and inventive, globally inspired dishes with exceptional service being a common highlight. While many rave about the unique flavors and attentive staff, a few diners have noted occasional inconsistencies in the food and less professional service experiences, particularly from the hostess.

"Thank you for the wonderful night on Saturday. Everyone was so lovely, went out of their way to be helpful, chat about the food and drink, recommend wines and just make it a night to remember. Best!

Highlights included the momos, the addictive bread with garlic toum and the mushroom butter on melt in your mouth steak. Honestly, everything hit the spot - we couldn't have been happier"

Giles Tranter

"What a great spot with a great sampling menu.
The service was prompt and attentive (water was topped up and extra cutlery forthcoming), they upgraded us to a spot inside and exchanged our desert without any fuss after we forgot to mention a dietary requirement.
Will be back and recommending."

Amanda H

"Unfortunately the excellent food and funky atmosphere were spoiled by a poor hostess, upon arrival. She made us feel unwelcome for being late. It was a sour tone to set for our anniversary dinner celebration.

All the other staff were pleasant & cheerful & engaging. The food was superb. I can recommend the chef’s banquet.

Be aware that construction in the area means that the normal parking options aren’t available, currently. Allow extra time."

The Best Restaurants In Canberra Right Now

A modern eatery and bar, Such and Such is the second venue from the team behind awarded Canberra restaurant Pilot. Busy terrazzo textures, bright colours, and eclectic art and design elements by local creatives complete the bold but welcoming venue, where the cuisine is globally inspired but, somehow, harmonious; savoury crullers sit alongside prawn okonomiyaki, pierogi, and chicken momo dumplings. There's room for 40 guests inside (plus bar seats) and another 40 outside to enjoy pre-theatre nibbles and drinks, long lunches on a $105pp set menu, happy hour snacks (3pm–5pm, Tuesday–Friday) or shared dinners accompanied by the sustainable and interesting wine selection.

5 best restaurants and bars to visit in Canberra

Such And Such’s ingredient-led menu is by executive chef Nick Petersen (ex-Porteno, Sydney), and on any day might feature fresh, plump oysters from nearby Narooma and a sensational starter of school prawns crusted in a cashew crumb and doused in 666 – dubbed the devil’s spice – to add wallop. Choose wines by the glass from the shortlist of current favourites or dive deeper into the 25+ pages of local and international drops. You’ll want to lick your bowl clean after your last mouthful of the blue eye cod in crazy water, made memorable for its impeccably sourced fish and mussels served in a beautifully seasoned bone broth with sun-dried tomato and cannellini beans.

Why Such and Such is one of the most exciting places to eat in Australia

Partners Dash Rumble and Ross McQuinn opened the smart-casual bistro with chef Malcolm Hanslow in February, opposite the Legislative Plaza in the middle of the city. The dining room pops with terrazzo tiles, a nubby-textured, boucle-fabric banquette, local ceramics, art by young Australian artists and a hand-blown glass sculpture that looks like a kaleidoscope crossed with a church organ. It’s an infectiously cheerful spot.

The Best Restaurants In Canberra (2025)

Nerdy food types be nerding when news broke that Dash Rumble, Ross McQuinn and Mal Hanslow, of two-hatted Pilot in Ainslie were opening a sister venue. That venture is Such And Such, a hole-in-the-wall eatery much more relaxed than Pilot, Canberra’s top fine-dining restaurant, but no less delicious and inventive. You’ll need to book in advance as there are only a handful of tables and a few bar spots.

The funky, punky younger sibling of Canberra’s renowned Pilot knows how to have fun. That might mean setting off flavour explosions by chucking well-seasoned steak tartare on an excellent anchovy and sage cruller. Or creating fusion sensation with the tzatziki-esque tartare sauce served with fried prawn cutlets.
