Italian and Sons is celebrated for its exceptional, high-quality Italian cuisine, particularly its handmade pasta and standout dishes like the grilled octopus. Diners often praise the warm atmosphere and attentive service, making it a popular choice for special occasions. However, some reviews mention inconsistencies in food quality and service speed, with occasional critiques on dessert options.
"Highly recommend!
Such a delicious meal, fabulous attentive staff and warm atmosphere.
This was our first visit and won't be our last!
Wonderful selection of Entrees, Pastas and Desserts. Daily specials including Steaks.
The Grilled Octopus was the most amazing Octopus I have ever eaten! Super tender and cooked to perfection! My husband had the Steak Special and it was also cooked to perfection! Compliments to the chefs!"

"It was a busy place and we made booking about a week ago, because we were visiting from Sydney. Focaccia with chestnuts honey was impresssive, loved it! However, that was the only highlight of the dinner. We also ordered wood baked eggplant, smoked swordfish crudo, suckling lamb pasta and tiramisu. I had to say that they were all just average compared to the price, nothing woohoo! The service was good, waitress being nice and friendly, filling up water regularly during the dinner. However, won’t go again, not worth it."

"Been here a few times now and can highly recommend this restaurant for the experience it provides.
The service is excellent - fine dining but not overly aloof.
The food is outstanding. You can taste and feel the quality of the ingredients used. For example, I think i could almost drink the olive oil used to dress the carpaccio.
A la carte may tempt, but I would highly recommend going in for the tasting menu. For the price, the experience is fantastic and relatively affordable as a special occasion.
I look forward to returning."

The 10 Best Italian Restaurants in Canberra
Pasquale Trimboli applied his learnings from Canberra’s much-loved Mezzalira to create the very sophisticated Italian and Sons in Braddon (yes, our own prime minister, Anthony Albanese, loves it). This award-winning fine diner serves seasonal Italian pasta and mains with top-quality produce, with the menu guided by the seasons. You can expect to enjoy renditions of pasta and generous piatti principali (main dishes) that change daily using the finest local ingredients like woodfired pork cutlet and char-grilled striploin.

The best places to eat + drink in Canberra
I’d read rave reviews about Italian & Sons and was really keen to try it out, but in all honesty, I cannot recommend this pizza joint and would avoid it if possible. It has a Chef’s Hat, so expectations were high, but sadly, neither the food nor the service was up to scratch in this cramped restaurant. From the rude treatment from disinterested wait staff, to their reluctance and in some instances refusal to make vegan adjustments to their pizzas and pasta dishes, to the forever-wait for our food to come out, to the homemade pasta that was thick and undercooked, to the sloppy pizzas that were uncooked in the middle though to the waiter drenching me with water at the end of the night and a hefty price tag of $250+ for dinner for three (this included some reasonably priced alcohol, but come on, it’s pizza, people!), I have nothing good to say about this restaurant.
Canberra's top 20 restaurants for 2018
Braddon was a sleepy part of the city before this chic tratt opened a decade ago and jolted Lonsdale Street to life. Date-nighters, birthday revellers and Canberra's social elite still can't get enough of the joint, meaning you'll absolutely need a reservation to experience its classic Italian cooking at the weekend. At the end of an elongated dining room warmed by a wood-fired oven, you can find the marble counter of Bacaro wine bar, before hitting the restaurant proper for housemade pasta – a slippery black tangle of squid ink linguine, say, rich with tomato, spanner crab and chilli.

It was the only place to get more than one vote in this week’s call out, and while there were quite a few other suggestions, they only got one vote each. It was up to me to choose who would be this week’s second contender. I had the difficult choice between some of Canberra’s best pasta joints – Loading Zone or Mama’s Trattoria in the City, Eightysix or Chez Frederic in Braddon, La Cantina at Narrabundah shops, Zucchini Bros in Chisholm, La Rustica on the Kingston Foreshore or Grande’s on the Lawns in Manuka.
