Sweet, salty, sour, spicy – the classic flavours of Bali make sense in tropical Cairns. At Bayleaf, the menu evokes balmy island evenings, the air redolent of spice and smoke. Try classics such as ayam sagur (poached chicken salad with peanuts, mango, beans, coriander, mint and coconut dressing), nasi goreng (Balinese fried rice with fried egg) and bebek betutu (twice-cooked whole duck in banana leaf).

Bayleaf can be easily overlooked on a trip to Cairns as it’s away from the main strip, halfway down Lake Street. Unlike most Aussies, I still haven’t been to Bali, but using my well-seasoned snout from many years living in Southeast Asia (including Malaysia), I’d say it probably doesn’t get more authentic than this. We also saw regular Indonesian diners, which is always a good sign.

Chinese New Year is also huge here, with the city celebrating with a 15-day festival featuring yum cha, lion and dragon dance performances, and a lantern festival within the festival.

Bayleaf is more than just a restaurant; it’s a Balinese experience nestled in the heart of Cairns. The fragrant aromas and intricate flavours promise a culinary journey to Indonesia’s beloved island. Each dish, especially the ‘Bebek Betutu’ (marinated duck), is crafted with care, aiming to transport diners to the serene terraces of Bali.

Despite Australia's proximity to Indonesia, authentic Balinese food is hard to come by. This local gem is the exception to the rule, located just north of the city center at Bay Village Tropical Retreat and Apartments. Bayleaf specializes in home-style share plates, including classics like nasi goreng and spicy grilled fish.

The second (and last one) was called Bayleaf Balinese Restaurant. It was a bit of a walk from the hotel but looked promising as it was almost complete by the time we arrived, less than 30mins after the start of their evening opening hours.
