A Byron brunch staple since 2008, the Top Shop team converted this former 1950s milk bar on the hill into a thriving eatery, making use of its original signage and adding hand-built furniture and surf memorabilia. The café has a reputation for small-town hospitality and healthy brunch offerings with ingredients sourced from Byron farmers. The shop opened as The Top Store milk bar and takeaway in 1951, which makes it the 2nd earliest continually running business in the Byron Bay area after The Great Northern Resort. Ask any kind of Byron Bay local their favourite spot for a coffee or a relaxed lunch and also they’ll most likely claim it’s The Top Store. From surfie to hippy to current city imports, The Leading Shop interest all of the distinctive town’s walks of life, not to mention the streams of visitors who handle to find it as well as their very own spot of lawn out the front to resolve into some sunlight.

Top Shop is a Byron institution and alongside Folk is my favourite place to take a friend for brunch in town. This relaxed corner café (set in a converted old milk bar) is perched up the hill around a 20 minute walk inland from The Pass and has the chillest weekend hangout vibes.Grab yourself a spot on the grass or inside post surf or hike and choose something from their mouth-watering menu. Their brekkie burger is famous, and my personal recommendation is the açaí bowl with a big dollop of Macadamia nut butter on the side (see photo below).

There’s something about this place that gets me every time, set on top of a hill, a humble little shelled out house they keep the dining very simple with most people enjoying the sunshine and fresh air outside on the lawn or patio. I’ve included The Top Shop for their coffee, they always serve up a solid coffee, and they stock some decent cold brew as well. As for the food it’s simple burgers, pastries, muffins, chia puddings so not up my alley but popular with the majority who aren’t so strict with their diet.

Set in a 1950’s milk bar, Top Shop has a distinct locals feel to it and, in my opinion, serves up the best coffee in Byron Bay. With an all-day menu, you’re spoilt with plenty of tantalising options to choose from including granola, acai and omelette bowls, breakfast favourites like avo on toast, sandwiches and burgers. You can definitely get your hands on a well-priced bite here with food that’s fresh, delicious and unpretentious – it’s just good ingredients that taste amazing!.

Coffee before cocktails is essential, and it’s unlikely you’ll find a better cup in Byron than at Top Shop. As the name suggests, this locally loved cafe sits on the top of a hill and is best known in town for serving up excellent, Single Origin coffee, along with a tasty range of burgers and sandwiches. Heads up — this place can get rather busy, so just in case you can’t find a seat, do as the locals do and sit on the grass by the road for a makeshift picnic.

Byron Bay coffee shops don’t get more unique than Top Shop, which is actually a converted 1950s milk bar atop a hill – just up from Clarkes Beach. This laid-back hangout has become popular as it slings single origin coffee, and an extensive burger selection – we can’t go past their fish burger, which often sells out. With that said, it also serves up colourful breakfast bowls, and cracking sandwiches and salads for those after something a little bit lighter.

If there was an award for the most hipster breakfast spot in Byron then The Topshop would be a solid contender for the title!. Despite being a little out of the main centre of town The Topshop is always busy and their all day menu is great value for money, with brekkie options starting at $13.50. Whether you fancy a vegan BLT (my personal fave), an omlette bowl or an avo bagel everything is well priced and will hit the spot!

Nestled amidst a palm-lined street of homes is the casual brunch venue that focuses on takeaway options. Acai bowls, burgers (particularly of the bacon and egg variety) and delectable coffees are the venue’s specialty.

You’ll need to get out of the main block to find this hill top gem. Originally a corner store and milkbar, this eatery is now known for its love of good coffee, moreish food and is popular with visitors and locals alike. If you love a great burger then this is your place especially the haloumi burger and their famous brekky burger.

This ultra-fun cafe is perched on a grassy knoll outside of town, in a converted 1950s milk bar. The Kokomo old school surf aesthetic takes you back to the good old days of Byron Bay. They serve up incredible single-origin coffee and there is even kombucha on tap, meaning the seating inside is generally chock-full.

For breakfast my go-to cafe was ‘Top Shop’ – not the clothing store for any brits reading this!. Far enough away from the town centre that it has a more ‘local feel’ and it served up great chicken pesto sandwiches on sourdough and their banana smoothies were actually a bit too good!. I went there far too often!.

You don’t need to have a man bun or piercings to enjoy a bacon and egg roll at Top Shop, but it helps if you want to feel a sense of belonging in Byron. Enjoy a post-surf lunch at Top Shop in the 100-year-old cottage that was once a milk bar, and then lounge on the lawn for the better part of the afternoon.

It’s just a five-minute walk from the centre, but this former 1950s milk bar feels like a real find – until you see the queue for coffee, at least. Top Shop has limited seating, so meals are served in eco-friendly disposable packaging and most patrons stake out a patch on the grassy knoll out front.

Burringbar Rail Tunnel Hike: A bit further out of Byron is this magical hidden track. A completely dog friendly walk and free parking!. Follow this disused railway line to an amazing (approx. 1 km) railway tunnel, inside we saw small bats and glow worms in the darkest of parts.

Then, hit one of the breakfast or coffee spots in the town like Succulent Cafe Byron Bay, the Top Shop and Bayleaf Cafe. Sit at a table, people watch or read a book. You may also go back to your hotel so you can rest a little bit before you head to the beach in the afternoon.

Open from 6.30am, getting a table can be tricky; but as the locals will tell you, it’s the best coffee in town and well worth the wait. Order a breakfast burger and house-made macadamia milk iced latte, and enjoy your breakfast fare picnic-style on the patch of lawn outside.

Top Shop was one of my faves back in the day and it still knocks out epic food just like I remember… This place must have been going 10 years now. Great coffee, great sambos for on the go and the real draw card…, The Chocolate and berry muffins. I’m calling best in Straya!

Residing in a former 1950s milk bar, the food and coffee is fantastic. The breakfast burger, pastrami sandwich and chilli chicken burger are all worth a try. There are also plenty of gluten free options.

Even though The Top Shop is located slightly further out of town, it’s totally worth the stroll. The vibe there is great, with people taking blankets to sit on the grass verge outside to eat.

Must haves are the Acai bowl, Breakfast burger and the Shop Burger. Good for take away and sitting on the grass. It can get very busy over the weekends and is located on a busy intersection.

Top Shop, just off the road leading up to Byron’s impressive lighthouse is another great option. I can’t go past the burgers, cakes and refreshing home-made kombucha whenever I visit!

I came yesterday and had a bacon and egg burger and returned today and tried the breakfast burger. Both were delicious. Breakfast and a drink was under $25.

What was once a 1950s milk bar is now the hive of activity full of locals and visitors all there for the same reason - great coffee and even better food.
