Moving from stand to stand, Liaw samples each entrant’s creation – a pearl meat ceviche with a chilli soy sauce on a bed of marinated cucumber from the team at The Zookeepers Store; Zeebar’s pearl meat susame (a kind of local sashimi) with red cabbage and sesame seed slaw and lotus root chips; Matso Brewery’s pickled pearl meat morsel with wasabi, wakame, dragonfruit and a nori crisp. There’s even a Mediterranean take from the Oaks team: pearl meat soused with lemon juice, brandy and saffron served with caramelised onion, confit tomato, roasted pine nuts and a fried basil leaf. It’s not only Liaw sampling the moreish bites; guests flit between the stalls, tasting and comparing each dish.

It was the first beverage we had at the Cable Beach Club, served on ice with a wedge of lime and it was basically the default beverage of choice. The brewery restaurant is worth a visit as well for it’s charming story, Asian-inspired menu, and array of other refreshing beverages brewed there.

We had the pleasure of spending an afternoon sampling 5 different fruit beers when we tried Matso’s Tasting Paddle. We chose the Ginger Beer, Mango Beer, Matso’s Hard Lemon, Angry Ranga which was ginger chilli flavoured and Pearler’s Pale Ale.

Specializing in the unusual combination of Indian food and mango & chilli beer!. The mango beer is a unique experience, but I must say the chilli was a step too far for me (Yes, you need the curry to wash the beer down!). Lovely grounds for the kids to have a bit of a run around, as well as some arcade games to keep them entertained.

Tom and I went here a couple of times and swigged down a tasting paddle of some of their incredible beers along with some fresh seafood and snacks. Hang out at Matso’s brewery: …..and check out the local ales. Head Brewer Marcus L Muller also gives tours of the brewery, waves his arms around a lot, speaks extremely fast and obviously LOVES his job. My favourites are the very popular Matso’s Ginger Beer and the smooth, strong Smokey Bishop.

Great place to stop for a drink or a bite - they have gluten free ginger beer, which you can mix with a spicy chili ginger beer for your desired level of kick. They also sell a cider or two for other. Lots of gluten free options on the menu, reasonably priced and really really good and filling.

Even though Matso’s Brewery is the only brewery in Broome, you will not be disappointed. This family-run brewery is open 7-days a week serving unique products like mango beer, ginger beer, and many flavourful hard ciders. They are famous for their “ice-hot chili beer”, talk about unique.

Matso Brewery is maybe the most delicious of the top things to do in Broome. We stayed across the road from Matso so we ended up eating a breakfast, lunch and dinner here and enjoyed them all. Matso brews its own beers including interesting mango, ginger and chili options.

You will probably visit Matsos (‘the most remote brewery in Australia”) on your day tour. It has become one of the most popular hangouts in Broome. It is a great location for a drink and to enjoy the live music they often have in the gardens on an afternoon.

After the drive back to Broome, ask the bus driver to drop you at local brewery Matsos for a beer flight tasting (our damper earlier that day had been made with their Mango beer), an icy cold (non alcoholic) ginger beer and an award winning steak sandwich.

It was getting hot by about 11.30 and we went to Matso’s Brewery for lunch. Dogs allowed in the courtyard. They had an excellent barman called Sam, obviously a dog-lover, who brought me bowls of water and had his picture taken with me.

Matso’s Brewery is a Broome institution, established over 20 years ago in the historic Matso’s Store. They’re most famous for their Mango Beer and alcoholic Ginger Beer, although they’re not the only beers they typically have on tap.

They’re known for their ginger beer but I fell pretty madly in love with their whole range. There’s a mango beer that actually tastes good and not super-fruity, a chili ginger beer with just the right kick, and a refreshing pale ale.
