Johnny Sausage is one of Broome’s best restaurants, and will have you crooning a happy, pasta-fuelled tune as you settle into its warm and friendly dining room. Order up a bottle of your favourite vino bianco and a few starters to get the ball rollin’. Dishes like gnocco fritto with taleggio and prosciutto San Daniele, kingfish crudo with buttermilk, green chilli and apple, tomato carpaccio topped with burrata and basil, and charred Fremantle octopus with smoked eggplant make choosing near impossible!

The Bay Club at the Mangrove Hotel is an outdoor bar and restaurant that overlooks Roebuck Bay and is a favourite cocktail spot of mine. You can order cocktails, a cold beer or wine to cool off from the heat and also get a bite to eat from their fabulous menu. It’s a popular spot to view the changing sky colour at sunset which can be spectacular against the red pindan soil, green mangroves and turquoise water.

On our last night, we went to the Mangrove Hotel where we witnessed the Staircase of the Moon. It’s a natural phenomenon every month when the full moon rises and creates the illusion of a staircase by reflecting the waters of Roebuck Bay in Broome. So unique and definitely worth planning your road trip in Western Australia around this event so you can witness it too!

During the heyday of Broome’s pearling industry, the pearlers (many from China, Japan, the Philippines, Indonesia and Europe) would arrive back on shore cashed up and head to the opium dens and billiard halls of Chinatown. Now, Chinatown is Broome’s main shopping district. It’s a fascinating mix of Colonial and corrugated sheds next to colourful Asian architecture.

Would recommend Mangrove Hotel always, great atmosphere especially when “Stairway to Heaven” is on. Service especially at the front desk with Chloe, was fantastic. We stayed in one the suites which were spacious and modern with amazing views.
