Kiin opened late last year (missing out on our best restaurants of 2022 wrap), but this Thai-fusion restaurant was too good to leave off this list. The CBD restaurant is a collaboration between sommelier David Wickwar, who founded Melbourne’s Vaporetto wine bar and chef Ben Bertei who has spent decades merging Thai flavours with Western techniques at Melbourne’s Longrain, Spirit House on the Sunshine Coast and Brisbane’s Same Same. The menu playfully crosses cuisines while staying true to the core tenants of Thai food – the right balance of salty, spicy, sweet and sour.

Vibrant Thai-inspired eats get the modern-day treatment with the dining experience at Kiin (meaning ‘eat’ in Thai). Brought to you by the former chef and partner at Brisbane’s stellar Same Same, his acclaimed Thai-inspired food – with a few Western influences – delights the fussiest of foodies, with inventive dishes pushing the boundaries on classic recipes. Enjoy the likes of a red curry cheeseburger with crispy onion, provolone and ketsup, burrata with green ‘nahm jim’ and roti, flavour-packed curries and delicious sides to complete the feast.

A sense of adventure permeates Kiin’s predominantly Northern Thai menu, fuelled largely by regular research trips to the Land of Smiles. Chiang Mai “phat Thai” rice cakes channel the chaos of city street vendors, sizzling on tao charcoal burners visible from perches at the kitchen counter. Karen rice – a nod to the Karen people who call the mountainous Golden Triangle home – draws contented sighs across the warehouse-style room thanks to its earthy-fragrant congregation of bamboo shoots, Thai basil, ginger and chicken fat.

We picked their massaman mushroom arancini with a zesty kick, curried fish toast bringing the crunch, and a red curry cheeseburger—7 to 15-buck plates epitomizing their fusion cooking style. To drink, the limoncello spritz is the standout, along with Aphelion’s grenache.
