Reviews Summary

arkhe is lauded for its exceptional food, innovative use of open-flame cooking, and cozy atmosphere. Many rave about the tasting menus and unique flavor combinations. However, some diners have experienced significant service issues, including slow attention from staff and long waits between courses, which detracted from their overall experience.

"Honestly, I didn't have high expectations before going there. I chose the set menu, which was around $190 per person, including lobster, though I don't remember the exact figure. To my pleasant surprise, this place was different from other restaurants that focus on lavish decor but lack good food. It had a cozy atmosphere, friendly staff, and every dish delighted my taste buds in a unique way, even the desserts. I will definitely bring my family back to enjoy it again. 👍"

"Chose to do ala carte with Arkhé. The dishes we chose were based on the suggestions given by waitress. The dumplings had a good flavour, the cauliflower was nicely charred paired with a creamy somewhat tangy sauce. The pork belly was juicy. The steak was a bit of a let down as we asked for medium rare but it was more on the rare side. The one criticism I have though is the service. We picked a day where it was very busy, however we were not tend to for long periods of time especially at the start when we wanted to order. It was hard to capture the attention of any waiter as they were busy attending a large group next to us. We ordered a bottle of wine and they didn’t leave the bottle of wine at our table resulting in us having to wait a while for someone to top us off."

"We had a lovely Sunday evening at arkhé. The first sensation is the incredible ambience of the place - warm, cosy and comfortable. Service is impeccable with the right amount of attentiveness and our wine glasses were never empty. The chefs menu was filling and our favourites were the ribs and prawn toast. I’d highly recommend getting the focaccia to mop up all the amazing sauces"

When the world seems weary, cynical, distracted, you can walk into arkhé and the planets start to realign. The welcome is warm and genuine, the mood upbeat, the sense of a large team working with common purpose strangely reassuring. From a seat at the counter (highly recommended), it is a pleasure to watch it all unfold: the fire powering furnace-like ovens, grills and even a cauldron deep-fryer; the preparation of unlikely ingredients such as a magnificent turbot (fish); the synchronicity and sense of calm in a kitchen under the leadership of Jake Kellie, who learnt his craft at Singapore’s revered Burnt Ends.

With no gas or electrical stovetops, everything at this stylish neighbourhood fine diner is grilled, toasted, charred, roasted, caramelised and even fried over glowing chunks of river red gum. And the menu is far from a parade of proteins slapped on the grill (though the richly marbled steaks, butterflied fish and southern rock lobster are all done to perfection).
