One thing I would highly recommend doing in Athens, is to visit the Athens catacombs located under the Agia Triada Church. They were discovered under the church in the 19th century.  The catacombs date back between the 2nd and 4th century AD. They are modest in size and the tour is quite short, but it was fascinating seeing and learning about this Byzantine subterranean space.
