"UNTOLD STORIES YA KUMWESU: CHIRUNDU FOSSIL FOREST
By Elijah Mutambo,
Approximately 150 million years ago, the Luangwa Valley was a forest with big coniferous trees. These trees were different from the ones we see in zambia today. It is believed that a big flood knocked the trees down, and they were eventually buried in soil. Over time, the trees turned into stones through a process known as fossilization or petrification which preserves details of the original wood structure.
The fossils are still in the same position as when the trees fell in the Jurassic period, giving us a glimpse into the past.
Scientists believe that the area was once wet and the temperate, perfect for these trees to grow. But the same conditions that helped them grow also made them vulnerable to storms and floods.
Find time to visit the Chirundu fossil Forest."

"We went up to the Fossil Forest after enduring almost two hours of driving, from Kafue Gorge.
We only managed to see two full tree trunks closer to the highway.
It was so fascinating to witness how 150 million year old trees have literally turned into solid rock!
While we did do some basic research before traveling there, the guided tour was well worth it: Mr Amos---The Guide---has been working from the site for the last 19 years!"

"I love this place! I have come here three times. There is no real explanation or meaningful cultural engagement, but it does tell you literally what it is. And the pwtrified wood really looks like wood! Someone will eventually wander over to you and ask you to pay them to go see some bigger pieces across the street, which you can take or leave. Nice place to stretch your legs nefore the last stretch of your journey, either to Lower Zam or before reaching Siavonga (only about 3-4 extra minutes of driving round trip if you are heading south from the junction)."
