Syriac Orthodox faithfuls and parishioners gathered for the prayers of the evening (vespers) on Friday, at the church of St Elijah the Prophet in the village of Beth Qustan in Tur Abdin; led by Abun Khuroyo Gabriel Aktaş. Important to note, though some sources attribute it to the St Elijah a minor saint martyr, others link it to St Elijah the Prophet; a major saint of our church. #syriac #orthod...

On Sunday 22/06/2025 at St Elijah Orthodox Church in Damascus, Syria, a suicidal bombing killed 25 Christians during the Divine Liturgy. This is a powerful sermon in honour of the new martyrs of Christ delivered by His Beatitude Patriarch of Antioch John X. These words remind us on a dialogue that St Basil the Great had with eparch (governor) Modest. Here is the excerpt: “Then indeed the prefect...

"Evpatoriy"

С. Н.

"A beautiful temple, of extraordinary beauty in architecture and decoration both outside and inside. It was built using local materials - sawn shell rock, so all the finishing elements are not molded, but carved in shell rock.
The history of the construction of the temple is interesting.
The well-known grandiose Cathedral of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker in Evpatoria was consecrated in 1899, and just 2 years later, in 1901, the Evpatoria Greek Community appealed to the city council to the mayor Mamun Nikolai Andreevich with a request to allocate a place for the construction of a new church.
The Duma made a positive decision and instructed Adam Ludvigovich Genrikh, who held the position of city architect at that time, to choose a place in the architectural plan of Evpatoria and develop a project. The project of the church in the Greco-Byzantine style (in the form of a cross) was developed and built under the supervision of Heinrich in the period from 1911 to 1916. On June 30, 1918, the church was consecrated in honor of the Prophet Elijah. The Church of the Prophet Elijah is one of more than 50 buildings built in Yevpatoria according to the projects of Adam Heinrich during the 25 years when he was the city architect. Therefore, the spirit of Yevpatoria lives in it, along with God's grace."

"The architecture of the temple is very interesting, the interior is relatively small, but cozy. On one of the walls of the temple from the outside you can see a blow, they say from a shell or a rocket, but thank God, the temple works!!!"

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

A Legacy in Stone: The Architecture of St. Elijah Church

St. Elijah Church in Yevpatoriya is a remarkable example of Greco-Byzantine architecture, distinguished by its construction from local sawn shell rock. Unlike molded elements, all the finishing details are meticulously carved directly into the stone, giving the church a unique texture and aesthetic. The project was developed by Adam Ludvigovich Genrikh, the city architect, and the church was built between 1911 and 1916. Its cross-shaped design is a classic element of Byzantine religious architecture, emphasizing symmetry and spiritual harmony. Reddit

The choice of shell rock not only provided a local and distinctive building material but also allowed for intricate, hand-carved ornamentation. This approach to construction imbues the church with a sense of organic beauty and craftsmanship. The exterior, while grand, is also characterized by its detailed carvings, making it a visual delight for visitors. The church's design reflects a period when religious buildings were not just places of worship but also significant artistic and architectural statements. Reddit

Inside, the church maintains a cozy yet beautiful atmosphere. While not as grand in scale as some cathedrals, its interior is thoughtfully designed to foster a sense of peace and devotion. The blend of architectural style and the use of local materials creates a sacred space that is both historically significant and aesthetically pleasing. Reddit

From Greek Community to Russian Orthodox: A Shifting History

The history of St. Elijah Church is intertwined with the diverse religious communities of Yevpatoriya. Initially, the Greek community of Yevpatoriya appealed to the city council in 1901 to allocate land for a new church. This request led to the development of the project by Adam Genrikh and the subsequent construction of the church, which was consecrated in honor of the Prophet Elijah on June 30, 1918. For a significant period, the church served the Greek Orthodox population. Reddit

Over time, the religious landscape shifted, and the church eventually came under the administration of the Russian Orthodox Church. This transition reflects the broader historical and demographic changes in the region. Despite these changes in affiliation, the church has remained a vital spiritual center for its parishioners. The continuity of worship within its walls underscores its enduring importance as a place of faith and community. Reddit

Furthermore, the church has witnessed significant historical events. During World War I, it was shelled by a German-Turkish warship, leaving visible marks on its exterior walls. These scars serve as a poignant reminder of the church's resilience and its role throughout periods of conflict. Today, it stands not only as a religious site but also as a historical monument bearing witness to Yevpatoriya's past. Reddit

A Haven for Felines: The Cats of St. Elijah Church

An unexpected and delightful aspect of visiting St. Elijah Church is the presence of a large colony of cats that inhabit its grounds. These felines, of various colors and temperaments, have become an integral part of the church's charm. They are often seen lounging in the sun, exploring the greenery, or interacting with visitors, adding a unique, heartwarming dimension to the spiritual atmosphere. Reddit

The local community and churchgoers have embraced these feline residents, recognizing their presence and ensuring their well-being. A dedicated donation box is available on-site, specifically for the sterilization and treatment of the cats. This initiative highlights a compassionate approach to animal welfare within a religious setting, demonstrating a harmonious coexistence between faith and nature. Reddit

For visitors, encountering these friendly cats can be a memorable part of their experience. It offers a chance for gentle interaction and a moment of lighthearted joy amidst the historical and spiritual significance of the church. It's a testament to the inclusive and welcoming spirit of the place, extending kindness to all its inhabitants, both human and animal. Reddit
