What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Reviewers consistently praise the Old Quarter's vibrant atmosphere, excellent street food, and the helpfulness of local staff, especially in hostels. While the bustling streets and narrow lanes can be overwhelming, the authentic experience and affordability make it a highly recommended destination for most visitors.
"the hostel is quite nice, clean rooms, clean showers. common area is maybe not immediately conducive to socializing but there are good events (free beer!) that make it easy to get chatting. BILLY though was the absolute highlight of the stay here, top notch tour guide for our free walking tour - funny, knowledgeable, and so so friendly! massive thank you to him, made it super easy to get a feel for the city as soon as i arrived. he really carries the weight of most of these five stars! cảm ơn :))"

"Had a great stay. Facilities were indeed as clean as I read in other reviews. The rooms and beds were well designed, however if your charger is heavy, it could fall out of the outlet by the bed. I had to put some clothes beneath the plug to prevent it from falling out. I would suggest you bring a small extension cable if you have this kind of heavy charger brick. The curtains did provide good privacy around the bed, however my particular bed had a gap in the curtains so my bed was less private than others. Location was excellent in the heart of Old Quarter and despite being close to the party streets, it was quiet in the hostel at night. The laundry service was clutch and very simple with 24 hour standard service and expedited 10 hour service. The staff were wonderful and Le Phuc was extremely helpful with helping me book my 1 day trip to Ha Long Bay well as explaining the other trip options. I recommend the Ha Long Bay trip (see my Instagram @nomaditsu vlog for details). Shelly and Nancy provided great local recommendations. Would definitely stay here again!"

"Highly recommended hostel in Hanoi!
I stayed here for three days and was honestly impressed by the quality of the place. Everything is very clean, the rooms are comfortable, and the beds offer plenty of privacy. The atmosphere is perfect for meeting other travelers, and the location is ideal for exploring the city.
What really makes this hostel stand out is the staff : they are incredibly kind, attentive, and always ready to help. I joined their free guided city tour and also booked my Ha Giang Loop through them; both were perfectly organized.
A few weeks after my stay, I returned to Hanoi just for an afternoon to catch a bus, and they kindly agreed to store my backpack until my departure. That level of hospitality honestly makes a huge difference.
I can’t recommend this hostel enough if you’re staying in Hanoi!"

Walking is by far the best way to experience the Old Quarter's atmosphere and discover hidden gems. For longer distances or when tired, consider a cyclo (bicycle rickshaw) for a unique perspective, or use ride-sharing apps.
Public buses do pass through the edges of the Old Quarter, but they are often crowded and not the most convenient for navigating the intricate network of lanes. Walking or using ride-sharing apps is generally preferred by visitors.
Noi Bai International Airport (HAN) is about 25-30 km from the Old Quarter. A taxi or pre-booked airport transfer will take approximately 45-60 minutes, depending on traffic.

While the Old Quarter is free to explore, individual attractions within it, such as museums, temples, or historical houses, may have admission fees. It's best to check the specific entry requirements for any site you plan to visit.
Most shops and restaurants in the Old Quarter open relatively early, around 8-9 AM, and stay open late into the evening, often until 10 PM or later, especially on weekends. Street food vendors may operate even later.
To avoid the biggest crowds, try visiting on weekday mornings. Evenings and weekends are significantly busier as locals and tourists alike come out to enjoy the atmosphere and street food.
For very popular spots like Pizza 4P's or Michelin-rated Bún Chả Que Tre, making a reservation is highly recommended, especially during peak dining hours or on weekends, to avoid long waits.
🎫 🧭 Onsite Experience
You absolutely must try Bún Chả (grilled pork with noodles), Phở (noodle soup), and Bánh Mì (Vietnamese baguette sandwich). Many street food stalls offer delicious and affordable options.

The Old Quarter is a vibrant, bustling, and sometimes chaotic sensory experience. Expect narrow streets filled with motorbikes, street vendors, local shops, and a constant hum of activity.
Generally, the Old Quarter is safe at night, but like any busy urban area, it's wise to be aware of your surroundings and keep valuables secure. The atmosphere becomes even more lively with night markets and food stalls.
Beyond food, consider a traditional water puppet show, exploring the night market, or simply getting lost in the 36 streets, each historically dedicated to a specific trade.
📸 📸 Photography
Capture the essence of the Old Quarter by photographing its narrow streets, colorful shopfronts, bustling markets, and street food vendors. The Train Street (though access can be restricted) and the Hoan Kiem Lake area offer iconic shots.
Early mornings offer softer light and fewer crowds, ideal for capturing the quiet charm. Evenings are fantastic for vibrant street life and neon signs, but can be crowded.
While not always explicitly advertised as 'photography tours,' many general walking tours will take you to photogenic spots. You can also hire a local guide for a more personalized photography experience.
A versatile lens (like a 24-70mm equivalent) is great for street scenes. A wide-angle lens can capture the narrowness of the streets, and a prime lens with a wide aperture is useful for low-light food photography.
Be respectful and ask permission before taking close-up portraits. Focus on candid moments of daily life, like vendors preparing food or locals going about their day.
