"We had such a wonderful time at Lantern Making Class with Lynn! From the moment we arrived, Lynn made us feel welcome and at ease. Her passion for the craft really shines through, and she has a lovely way of explaining each step so that it feels both accessible and inspiring—even if you’re a total beginner like we were.
Whether you're looking for a peaceful solo activity, a fun outing with friends, or a meaningful creative workshop, I highly recommend this class. Thanks again ! 🥹"

"Lynn was so nice and helpful. There was two of us during the workshop so we had her full attention. Really enjoyed the calm activity and came out with 2 great lanterns. Went for the longer workshop (350k) which allowed us to assemble the 'skeleton' of the lanterns as well as choosing our designs. Would highly recommend as Lynn is great with the camera and you'll have plenty photos by the end. Great location too. Nice and peaceful but not far from main area of town. 10/10"

"Nice place in the center of Hoi An. It a was funny experience and all the family members were kind and ready to assist you during the assembly of the lanterns. 350k Dong for the 1.5 hrs course (building from scratch) and 250k Dong for the express course (you will start from the bare structure). Lanterns can be partially collapsed so they are easier ti carry during your journey. It Is also possible to buy ready-made lanterns (from 150k Dong)."

The Art of Hoi An Lanterns
Participating in a lantern making workshop offers a unique opportunity to understand the dedication and skill involved. You'll learn about the different types of silk used, the techniques for stretching it over bamboo frames, and the art of painting intricate designs. It's more than just a craft; it's an immersion into local traditions and a chance to create a tangible piece of Hoi An's soul to take home.
Many workshops emphasize using eco-friendly materials and traditional methods. Some even incorporate recycled fabrics, adding a modern sustainable twist to the ancient craft. This hands-on experience provides a deeper appreciation for the beauty and cultural significance of these iconic lanterns, making your souvenir truly special.
Choosing Your Perfect Workshop
Consider the duration and scope of the workshop. If you want to build your lantern from the ground up, including assembling the bamboo frame, opt for a longer session (around 1.5-2 hours). If you're pressed for time or prefer to focus on the artistic aspect, a shorter session (around 45 minutes) dedicated to painting and decorating might be ideal.
Collapsibility is a key feature for travelers. Many workshops ensure their lanterns can be easily folded down, making them convenient to pack in your luggage. Always check if this feature is available if you plan to carry your creation home.
Tips for a Smooth Workshop Experience
Dress comfortably and be prepared for a hands-on activity. While most workshops provide all necessary materials, wearing clothes you don't mind getting a little paint on is a good idea. The atmosphere is generally relaxed and therapeutic, making it a great way to unwind.
Finally, remember that your finished lantern is a unique souvenir. Handle it with care, and enjoy the satisfaction of having created something beautiful with your own hands. The collapsible nature of many lanterns makes them easy to transport, ensuring you can cherish this memory long after your trip.
