What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors find Hoa Lu Ancient Capital to be a peaceful and spiritual site with beautiful temples and well-maintained gardens, offering a glimpse into Vietnam's early history. While some note a lack of extensive ruins, the historical atmosphere and scenic surroundings are highly appreciated. Be prepared for potential crowds and persistent vendors, especially during peak times.
"Hoa Lu Ancient Capital is a remarkable historical site that offers a deep glimpse into Vietnam’s early foundations. Once the capital of Vietnam in the 10th and 11th centuries, Hoa Lu served as the political and cultural center during the Dinh and Early Le dynasties. Surrounded by dramatic limestone mountains and natural fortifications, the location was strategically chosen for both defense and natural beauty.
Walking through Hoa Lu feels like stepping into a living history book. The area is dotted with ancient temples, stone gates, and relics that honor important rulers such as Emperor Dinh Tien Hoang and Emperor Le Dai Hanh. The architecture, though modest, reflects traditional Vietnamese design with curved roofs, wooden pillars, and intricate carvings that have stood the test of time.
What makes Hoa Lu truly special is its peaceful atmosphere. Unlike bustling modern cities, the ancient capital allows visitors to explore at a relaxed pace while appreciating the harmony between history and nature. Hoa Lu is more than a historical destination—it is a meaningful journey into Vietnam’s past, offering insight, tranquility, and a strong sense of cultural pride."

"Hoa Lu Ancient Capital is spread across a vast area, so many visitors rent bicycles or motorbikes to explore the site. We chose to take motorbikes, and a lady approached us offering a ride for 100,000 VND per person. Since we were two people, we had to take two motorbikes.
Along the way, they explained stories related to the pagodas using Google Translate, which helped us understand the historical significance of the place. Hoa Lu is truly rich in history, and exploring the ancient pagodas was a meaningful experience.
After the tour, the motorbike driver asked for an additional tip of 50,000 VND per person. This felt a bit pricey, especially as it’s a very touristy place where such extra charges are common. I would suggest carrying small change to avoid any awkward situations.
Overall, it’s a historically important place worth visiting, but being mindful of costs will help make the experience smoother. The entry fee is less but people offering motorbike rides feels pricey."

"An enlightening learning journey of ancient Vietnam. Much will depend on the level of commitment and language competency your local guide if you are an English speaker. We found ours via our hotel concierge. Our guide, Ryan, was engaging and humorous. A young fellow who joked with the group to keep the long bus ride light hearted but also know when to let us rest in peace. He spoke fluent English and would share interesting stories about the place. Worth say tour from Hanoi."
