Reviews Summary

Cafe Giang is celebrated as the birthplace of Hanoi's iconic egg coffee, offering a unique, dessert-like beverage with a rich, creamy texture that's surprisingly free of any 'eggy' taste. Visitors appreciate the authentic, historic atmosphere and affordable prices, though the simple seating can be uncomfortable for some. It's a must-visit for the experience and the taste of a true Hanoi classic.

"As far as I am aware of, the only coffee drink from Vietnam is Vietnamese coffee, the one with sweet condensed milk. I was pleasantly surprised that in Vietnam, Egg Coffee is actually even more popular. Groups and couples all line up at the ground floor waiting for a spot at the second floor. We got a table with cute stools at the corner with hardly any space for a backpack (we had to leave the stroller at the ground floor). We ordered Egg Coffee (hot) and Egg Cocoa (cold). I don't know how they do it but the egg made the coffee super creamy and delicious. The taste is unique but in a good way. I tried the Egg Cocoa, it was also creamy but the taste was a little more familiar like a weird ice cream. Too bad the green rice I wanted to order was already sold out. I would love to visit this place again to try their desserts and other drinks, you should too."

"Tucked away in a narrow alley in Hanoi’s Old Quarter, it is easy to miss unless you’re looking for it. Inside, it’s particularly busy, with crowds stacked on small stools, tight spaces, and a constant stream of people coming in just to try the famous egg coffee.

The egg coffee itself is more like a dessert than a drink. It’s thick, creamy, and sweet, with just a light hint of coffee underneath. The texture is rich, almost like melted tiramisu or custard in a cup. Overall it’s memorable, but not something you’d want every day unless you really like rich, sweet drinks.

I’d say it’s trying at least once for the novelty and experience!"

""The feeling of drinking liquid tiramisu has a 0% fishy smell."
I visited Cafe Giang, the birthplace of the most famous egg coffee in Hanoi. There are countless copycat cafes, but you can immediately understand why this is the original place with just one sip.
Taste & Texture
There is no "fishy smell of eggs" that many people are worried about. Rather, it tastes like eating a very rich and savory custard cream or a luxurious tiramisu. The bitterness of the coffee and the sweetness of the cream create a perfect balance. As you can see in the picture, the cream is quite dense and thick.
2. Recommended menu and price (Menu & Price)
Egg Coffee (Cafe Trứng - Hot): 40,000 VND. I definitely recommend the warm version. It comes out in a warm water bath and can be enjoyed gently until the very end.
Egg Beer/Egg Cocoa: I recommend it if you want a different challenge, but classic is still the basic egg coffee.
3. Visit tips (Tips)
Space: The entrance is narrow, but the interior is deep and spacious. It's good to feel the local atmosphere, but please note that low tables like bath chairs can be uncomfortable.
How to drink: First, scoop up the cream with a spoon and taste it, then mix it with the strong coffee underneath.
Conclusion: If you've come to Hanoi, it's a must-visit course, not an option. It's a taste that keeps coming to mind even after returning to Korea. I highly recommend it!"

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

The Origin Story of Egg Coffee

Cafe Giang is not just a cafe; it's a living piece of Hanoi's culinary history. It's widely recognized as the birthplace of egg coffee (cà phê trứng), a beverage invented in 1946 by Mr. Nguyen Van Giang. TikTok+3 At a time when fresh milk was scarce in Vietnam, Giang, a former bartender at the Sofitel Metropole, ingeniously whipped egg yolks with sugar and condensed milk to create a rich, creamy topping for his strong Vietnamese coffee. This innovation transformed a simple coffee into a decadent dessert-like drink. TikTok+1

Visiting Cafe Giang offers a chance to taste this iconic drink in its original setting. The cafe's enduring popularity is a testament to the unique and delicious nature of Giang's invention. Many visitors describe the experience as stepping back in time, with the cafe retaining much of its original charm and character. TikTok+1 The simple, unpretentious decor and the communal seating arrangement contribute to its authentic, local feel. Reddit

While numerous other cafes in Hanoi now serve egg coffee, Cafe Giang remains the benchmark for authenticity. Travelers often seek it out specifically to experience the 'original' taste and understand the historical context behind this beloved Vietnamese specialty. TikTokReddit It's more than just a drink; it's a cultural experience that connects you to Hanoi's past. TikTok

Experiencing Egg Coffee: Taste and Texture

The star attraction at Cafe Giang is undoubtedly the egg coffee. Contrary to what some might expect, the taste is surprisingly pleasant and free from any 'fishy' egg odor. Reddit Instead, the whipped egg yolk, condensed milk, and sugar create a velvety, rich foam that sits atop a strong, dark Vietnamese coffee. TikTokReddit+1 Many describe the texture as akin to liquid tiramisu, custard, or a decadent mousse, making it feel more like a dessert than a typical beverage. Reddit

The flavor profile is a delightful balance between the bitter coffee and the sweet, creamy topping. Reddit This unique combination is what makes it so memorable and has earned it a place as a must-try Hanoi specialty. TikTokReddit For those who might find the classic egg coffee too intense, Cafe Giang also offers variations like egg cocoa, which provides a chocolatey twist on the creamy egg base, making it more approachable for a wider range of palates. TikTok

When you visit, it's recommended to savor the egg cream first with a spoon before mixing it with the coffee below. Reddit This allows you to appreciate the distinct layers and textures of the drink. The hot version is particularly recommended, as it's served in a warm water bath to maintain its temperature and creamy consistency throughout your enjoyment. Reddit

Navigating Cafe Giang's Unique Setting

Cafe Giang's charm lies in its historic and unpretentious setting. Located in a narrow alley of Hanoi's Old Quarter, finding it is part of the adventure. TikTok+1 Upon entering, you'll notice the cafe's deep layout, which opens up beyond the initial narrow entrance. Reddit The seating arrangement is distinctly local, featuring low tables and small stools, reminiscent of traditional Vietnamese cafes. TikTokReddit+1 While this contributes to the authentic atmosphere, some visitors find it can be uncomfortable, especially for extended periods or for those with mobility issues. Reddit

The interior is simple and functional, prioritizing the coffee experience over elaborate decor. Expect a bustling environment with a constant stream of patrons eager to try the famous egg coffee. TikTokReddit This can lead to tight spaces and a lively, communal feel. Despite its popularity, the cafe maintains a down-to-earth vibe, making it feel like a genuine local haunt rather than a tourist trap. Reddit

Despite the potentially less-than-plush seating, the overall experience is highly regarded for its historical significance and the quality of its signature drink. Reddit It's a place where you can truly immerse yourself in Hanoi's coffee culture and enjoy a taste of its past. TikTok+1
