Reviews Summary

El Silencio is praised for its unique architectural blend of colonial and modern styles, offering a glimpse into Caracas's history. It's a vibrant commercial hub with diverse shopping options, from everyday items to novelty large plush toys. Some visitors note its historical significance and the interesting urban planning.

"San Martin Avenue with Silence"

jean franconero silva

"As soon as Caracas was founded in 1567, the area now occupied by El Silencio was named El Tartagal. At that time, it was a field west of the original 25 city blocks, and Garcí González de Silva purchased the land a few years after Caracas's founding. The name El Silencio is presumed to have originated after an epidemic that killed all the inhabitants of that area.

For centuries, poor neighborhoods continued to settle in that area until the government of Isaías Medina Angarita ordered the demolition of all the houses, bars, and brothels in the area to make way for the redevelopment of El Silencio on July 25, 1942. Construction work began on January 4, 1943, with architect Carlos Raúl Villanueva in charge of the design, along with sculptor Francisco Narváez.

Block No. 1 was started in February 1944. The first block to be inaugurated was Block No. 7 on July 5, 1944. On August 26, 1945, the El Silencio Redevelopment project was inaugurated, comprising seven blocks and two plazas: Plaza O'Leary in the center of the area and Plaza Miranda located to the east of the development.

In 1999, El Silencio was declared a site of cultural interest. Since 2003, the Libertador Mayor's Office has reclaimed the area, which has since been called the El Silencio Urbanization."

"It's a very popular place with extraordinary architecture that blends colonial-era columns with modern buildings from the last century. They still have lamps with their designs that take us back to the days of the night watchmen."
