Reviews Summary

Visitors are consistently awestruck by the Tilya-Kori Madrasah's opulent gilded interior, calling it a highlight of Registan Square. While the exterior is impressive, the true magic lies within the mosque's dazzling gold leaf and intricate patterns. Some note minor signs of aging and the presence of souvenir sellers, but the overall experience is overwhelmingly positive, offering a glimpse into Samarkand's rich architectural past.

"Tillya-Kari Madrasah (1646-60).

Ten years later since the construction of the Sher-Dor madrassah, the ruler of Samarkand, Yalangtush Bahadur, erected another building to complete the ensemble. The construction began in the northern part of the Registan Square, on the place of the caravan-sarai. The architect decided that the new madrassah should be another copy of already existing buildings, though it would be located in the center, and constructed the façade in a way that visually created a closed space on the square.

The construction of the Tilla-Kori madrassah lasted more than 14 years from 1646 to 1660. The two-storey façade has two rows of niches with pointed arches. There is a blue-domed tower of the mosque to the left of the portal, and on both sides of the frontal part, at the corners of the building, two minarets with small domes standing.

The construction beautifully balances two bigger madrassahs without disturbing the unity of the architectural style.
The name Tilla Kori (= gilded) was given thanks to its décor. Artists had used the painting method of “kundal” for decoration that contained mostly gilt. Among all three madrassahs, this erection has a rich decoration of walls that leaves everyone impressed with the abundance of golden colors.

"Huge complex of the madrasah but it is not being used anymore. This building was constructed for 14 years. The blue dome make it look exquisite with two minarets on the side of building. Now there's a lot of sellers occupying different rooms selling souvenirs inside this place. There's also a mosque inside which can be used for prayer. There's museum and carpet making shop here too."

"Tilla-Kari Madrasa is one of the three magnificent madrasas that form the breathtaking Registan Square in Samarkand, alongside:

Ulugh Beg Madrasa

Sherdor Madrasa

Tilla-Kari Madrasa

The entry fee for Registan Square is 150,000 UZS, which grants access to all three historic madrasas.

Built in the 17th century, Tilla-Kari Madrasa (meaning "Gold-Covered") is renowned for its stunning architecture and elaborate interior. Though the entry gate is grand, it shows signs of aging and lack of maintenance, which slightly affects the first impression.

Inside, visitors can explore a small museum section that illustrates the madrasa’s historical role in Islamic education. The museum displays various artifacts and informative panels that describe the subjects once taught here.

The highlight of this madrasa is its gold-decorated mosque interior, which still retains much of its original beauty and elegance, making it a visual masterpiece.

Despite the wear, Tilla-Kari Madrasa remains one of the most iconic and visited landmarks in Samarkand, offering visitors a glimpse into the city’s rich architectural and educational past."

The Golden Splendor of Tilya-Kori

The Tilya-Kori Madrasah, meaning "gold-covered," is a breathtaking testament to the artistry of 17th-century Samarkand. Completed between 1646 and 1660, it stands as the youngest of the three magnificent madrasahs gracing Registan Square. Its name is derived from the lavish use of gold leaf in its interior decoration, particularly within the mosque, which is a true spectacle of intricate patterns and vibrant hues. This opulent design was intended to symbolize Samarkand's wealth and prominence along the Silk Road. InstagramReddit

The madrasah's architecture beautifully complements its neighbors, Ulugh Beg and Sher-Dor, without overpowering them. The facade features two stories with numerous arched niches, and its iconic blue-domed mosque and flanking minarets add to its grandeur. While the exterior is impressive, the true magic unfolds inside, where the 'kundal' painting method, rich with gilt, creates an unforgettable visual experience. InstagramReddit

Beyond its aesthetic appeal, Tilya-Kori served as an important center for Islamic education. Today, many of its former student cells, known as hujras, have been transformed into shops selling local handicrafts, offering visitors a chance to browse for souvenirs while imagining the lives of students centuries ago.
