"My friends and I went to Sabina’s shop with the aim to buy a carpet after this place was recommended to us by our guide. The shop is really big, providing a great variety of choice. You can notice immediately after entering that the place is pretty fancy, beverages and snacks were put aside on a nice tray to be provided for customers.
However, we must have been not considered as worthy customers as no one offered us anything to drink or eat, while the couple that was already in before we entered was served tea. The owner, Sabina, approached us after a few moments. She was kind enough to provide some information on her carpets and to show us some patterns, her English was excellent, she could also speak fluent Italian. We were interested in buying two carpets, the price of them were $750 and $1800 respectively. We asked what would be the discount we could count on if we decided to buy these 2 carpets - she replied that the only discount she can give us would be 20% but only if we buy these two carpets, no discount for a single carpet, she was very serious and cold at that point leaving no space for negotiation. We were pretty sure we wanted to buy them, however we wanted an hour or so to discuss it over so we asked her if she could keep the carpets for us for the time of one hour- she replied harshly that she doesn’t do that, that we can see there are not that many people in the shop anyway, meaning that basically it’s up to us if we want to risk. Moreover, after seeing us not being ultimately sure about buying these carpets she suggested that if the price is too high for us she could recommend another shop with cheaper but lower quality carpets. We were slightly surprised by such approach as she wasn’t exactly customer friendly. Especially that we wanted to buy a silk hand made carpet of good quality but needed some time to make the right decision but at that point we were still believing she was selling high quality, unique carpets in her luxurious boutique that were worthy their price so we swallowed this behaviour and left the shop wanting to walk a bit around and think it over. While walking we entered another carpet shop (Magic carpets) and we discovered that they were selling exactly the same carpet as the one from Sabinas shop (that one for $750) that we were interested in buying for a starting price of… $550! What’s more, the seller told us immediately that the price is negotiable. When I asked him what would be the price if we decided to buy 2 similar carpets, he told me without hesitation that it would be then $400 each. So $350 less then in Sabinas boutique just for a start without even asking too much for a discount! When we asked if he could hold the carpets for us just for an hour, he replied he would hold them till the end of the day so we could think it over. We were really shocked by the difference in price and customer approach in both shops, surely Magic carpet shop was not that fancy as Sabinas boutique, but the atmosphere was nice and cosy, the seller was very humble and honest and what’s more important the carpet was exactly the same for a much lower price! In the end, after some more of negotiations, we managed to buy two carpets (same size, both natural silk hand-made, different patterns) for $650, so each for $325. While at Sabinas just one of these carpets would be $600 after the generous 20% off that she was offering when buying 2 carpets!! So be careful and don’t rely just on one shop, go compare prices and don’t be afraid to negotiate the prices as most likely you can get more than 50% off when it comes to a carpet. Don’t get fooled"
