What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors find Puerta de la Ciudadela to be a historically significant monument marking the old entrance to Montevideo's citadel. While a brief stop, its location in Independence Square, offering views of the Salvo Palace and a pleasant park area, makes it a worthwhile point of interest for those exploring the city's heritage.
"Historic gate to the old town of Montevideo. The park behind it is fantastic as is the mosuleum beneath the statue"
David Rumptz
"Montevideo was a nice stop on a cruise that due to weather was extended to 3 days! I enjoyed the free walking tour that was both educational and entertaining. the city bus tour was more of a “footballers” thing. They love their history of the sport and the politics. two days were good, the 3rd could have been a beach day in season!"
Dave O. Dodge
"I liked the fact that after some other locations the gate finally was reconstructed here, only a few steps away from its original place.
I also understand why one had to reinforce its stand-alone situation with a wall. What I don't understand is, why it was turned around as it's now rather giving exit from the Old Town instead of leading into it. Maybe because of the nicer view over the Independence Square to the Salvo."

The History of Puerta de la Ciudadela
The decision to reinforce its standalone presence with a wall and its orientation have been points of discussion among visitors. Some note that it now appears to lead out of the Old Town rather than into it, perhaps to better frame the view of the Independence Square and the iconic Salvo Palace. This subtle shift in perspective highlights how historical monuments adapt to their evolving urban landscapes.
Exploring Independence Square
Beneath the prominent statue in the center of the square, you'll find the mausoleum of José Gervasio Artigas, Uruguay's national hero. This subterranean chamber adds a layer of solemnity and historical reverence to the otherwise vibrant plaza. Visitors often find the park behind the gate, which is part of the larger square complex, to be a particularly pleasant and relaxing area to explore, offering a green respite in the bustling downtown.
